Last August I bought a new iPad 3. At the time, the Beat Buy salesman suggested adding a tempered glass screen protector to my new purchase. After some teeth gnashing, I told him go ahead and install the screen protector because I can never seem to do it without having issues with trapped bubbles. Then about a month ago, I dropped my iPad and apparently cracked the screen.

Finally had some time today to return to Best Buy and see if my warranty covered having the cracked screen replaced. The Geek Squad employee discussed my warranty options; then a light bulb went off in his head and he says before we replace the iPad, do you by any chance have a screen protector on your iPad? I had totally forgotten that I did and the service man checks and sure enough I did. He looks at me and says sometimes the screen protector cracks and the screen is fine. He gently pulls the screen protector off and sure enough my iPad's screen is AOK and the screen protector is shattered.

Moral of story. Good thing I listened to the salesman! Don't just think of a screen protector as preventing scratches but also protecting against breakage. If you don't presently use a screen protector with your iPad, give it some thought!

I am using my iPad Mini now. How thick is this screen protector?

As a side note, tablets have completely changed how I use the Internet. I keep the iPad on the table next to my chair, and just randomly pick it up and check the forums. Basically, it has turned the Internet into a magazine I leaf through.

Maybe an 1/8" thick or less. But it's that super strong glass.

And agree with your comments but there are things I can't do on the iPad that can on my laptop.

Thanks. Agree about the laptop, but for consuming data, and minimal creation, a tablet is great. For adding pictures in a post on this site, a PC is much better. :)

Reading this on a mini iPad. No screen protector. These tablets/phones used to be made of gorilla glass so very durable. Not sure if that's still true any more. Does anyone know?

I like the new iPad screens. It some how hides fingerprint smudges really well. I didn't put on a screen protector for that reason alone.
