Fly Fishing?

It's salt water fishing for me. I love the surf and stripers. We have a summer home on the East End of Long Island.

The closest to an ocean fly fishing experience I've had was when two buddies and I spent the summer of 1989 (June 5th thru Sept 20th) on the Togiak River in Alaska guiding week long visitors at a fly in fishing camp. We saw five runs of Pacific Salmon come thru that year, a few Pinks, Chum, King, Sockeye and Silvers. Experienced them from chrome bright thru their rotting stages.

I've never fished Bonefish and would love to at some point in my life, but I can tell you that a fresh 10-12lb silver or sockeye salmon will also explode line from the reel over and over.

Alaska, one stop on my bucket list. I've caught so many Tarpon, Bonefish, Sails, Dolphin, and a few Permit, reds, trout on fly but I have always wanted to fish Alaska, not to mention enjoy my second hobby and that is landscape photography. The place is just beautiful.
 
Alaska is nice in the summer time; nice place to enjoy the wildlife and the vistas (mountains, rivers, ocean, ...). And the scenery deserved to be photographed and shared (not including oil spills).

Anyone here who has been there in the last, say four years or so, and with pics?
 
Hoping to get out on the Eagle River this weekend sometime. I stopped along a favorite stretch today while out running other errands and the water has receded a bit due to the cooler weather and the runs were clear. Perfect.

Bob, yes in central Colorado. There are other, more scenic options for sure, but the Eagle has it's own beauty and a real convenience factor for me. With the river running down the main valley here, the freeway (and homes, businesses, and private land) takes away from the "getting away from it all" experience. But, it's still fishing and it's still a challenge.
 
I'm a bachelor this weekend so music into the night and fishing during the day are on the agenda. Looking forward to the little break!
 
nice mike, i love to fish, but dont have much of a chance to fly fish. its all surf casting or off boats around here. i used to get enough crabs off the dock in my yard to feed me twice a week.
but have not replaced my crab traps after hurricane sandy claimed them.
have a good time !!!
 
Thanks Steve! Looking forward to waking the bank of the river and throwing streamers (flies 1-3 inches long that imitate small fish or big insects, frogs, birds, whatever LOL) down and across and working them back up along the edges. This type of fishing is best in high water times where the fish stack up against the bank in under cut areas or heavy bushes that overhang for protection from above and also the current. The hits can be explosive.

It's always a nice thing to tie flies and catch fish with your own creations Kev. I would love to fish for the browns in NZ one day....
 
Only fished for an hour and half today but had a blast. I landed two Brown trout (one 9 incher and one 14 incher) and rolled/hooked about a dozen more. One that I lost was a Rainbow Trout about 18 inches.

I'm rusty (given all the ones I lost after hookup) but still at least know where they live! :D

The rest of my day was spent tying flies to refill my primary fly box. I tied 4 dozen flies this afternoon / evening and still have a bunch to go to replenish it.

Somewhat true Bob. The fish do indeed jockey around the river looking for different holding and feeding positions depending on water clarity, flow, water temperature and oxygen levels but many times they can be found in the same general vicinity or section of river. It all just depends. Some years are different than others and the fish vanish from their normal holds. That's what makes the puzzle so fun.

Oh, and I always carry my net but it doesn't do much good when the fish come off further than my reach. :)
