Esoteric N-01XD

Great news! Aligned with the timing of Roon 1.8 release.

Let's hope that the USB firmware upgrade isn't mandatory since I have never been able to update it.

I am not sure why it would be mandatory since Roon connection is through the network right?
I can't get the USB update to work either. Won't connect.

But today I see the new I/F firmware update that Peter mentioned and I successfully installed it.

Thanks to Mike, I got the USB update to work. You have to use the USB input to update that one! So, that's THREE different ways to update firmware on this thing: micro-usb, usb, and soundstream app, all depending on what you are trying to update.

Kind of complicated, but now I know. I'm all up to date.

The updates with Esoteric must be the most cumbersome/ complicated that I have ever encountered. Not a big deal, at the end they work. It’s just the inconvenience and spending time figuring stuff out that should be explained better. Maybe a language and ‘ or cultural issue

That USB update only had an executable in the zip file, no pdf. Usually there is a pdf file with instructions for the update. A pdf would have been helpful, if only to tell the user which of the 3 USB inputs to use for the update :D

Believe it or not, this is already much better than the old models, for which you cannot even do it without additional specialized flash programmer hardware, so you will have to send back the whole unit for firmware upgrade.

I know, I've had many, many esoteric silver boxes in my system over the years.

I am really happy with the performance of my N-01xd, especially after this update.

Really appreciate your work and your help, Peter!

To clarify the firmware update, there are three parts. You need internet access, correct type of computer OS, and two different cables.

Network firmware update - run Esoteric Sound Stream app on iPad or Android, and it will prompt you to update it (via internet) if necessary

I/F firmware update - this needs to be connected to the micro USB port (normally unused)

USB MQA firmware update - this needs to be done over the USB-Type B port for USB DAC input

Important notes:

- Make sure you connect using the correct cable to the correct port (this is super important, someone did it wrong and bricked it)

- Make sure you have downloaded the correct software for the correct model - do not attempt to use a firmware not meant for your model (someone did that and bricked it)

- Make sure you use the real correct type of required computer OS, not virtual

- Follow instructions carefully

Doing these wrong could be disastrous.

If you need help, check with your dealer or Esoteric.

I'll send this feedback to Esoteric, see what they think about making it clearer.

I was able to update my NET firmware to the newest version. It now shows NET 123K

I was able to update my I/F firmware. It now shows 2.00a

When i paged through I saw M* 0C050200 I received my N-01xd in December and that is the firmware that came with it.

The current one on the esoteric site: - January 14th 2021 V0C0502

So it looks like my USB is current, before they made it available on the website.

Question about USB firmware.

I found the Firmware menu in he N-01xd.

I was able to update my NET firmware to the newest version. It now shows NET 123K

When i paged through I saw M* 0C050200 - is this the USB firmware. I received my N-01xd in December and that is the firmware that came with it.

Is that the current one on the esoteric site: - January 14th 2021 V0C0502

Can someone please confirm what their box shows, after the current USB update.

Wow, you are right. Mine also says "M", not "V". I've installed the "V" update. Peter, if you are listening...

In addition, while my N-01XD sounds amazing, it is experiencing dropouts randomly when I am using as a Roon endpoint. my network hasn't changed and I didn't get these dropouts when using a network bridge prior to the Roon certification.

The dropouts go away when I either power cycle the N-01XD, or even sometimes just restarting the song or switching to another song.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Nope, it has been 100% stable in my environment including replay of DSD256, 24/192 files.

My source is a Mojo Audio Dejavu Evo Linux server and I stream through a Melco S10 hub, the N-01XD being connected to a 100 Mbits/s port.

Cheers,
Bernard

Use the Esoteric app and see if you have these issues. If not, it’s Roon.

Please describe your network and how everything are connected together.

Please power off everything on your network including Roon Core, Esoteric, iPad, any network switches or access points. Power cycle the WiFi router, wait for 5 minutes, then power up everything else.

If you still get drop outs, please state the source of your music - Tidal, Qobuz, local music inside Roon Core, NAS, or anything else, and the sample rate, and format - PCM / MQA / DSD.

I guess you haven't owned PS Audio anything before.

Of PS Audio, the DirectStream Sr is the only piece I have owned from them. I thought downloading to SD card for updates worked pretty easily. I liked they kept the various software versions available to users should they wish to go back to earlier version.

Actually, I have done that... And after the last time I powered down everything and restarted, I've not had a dropout. It might be gone. If it does come back, I will post here.

I actually have. I owned a Directstream Sr. with Bridge II a few years ago. From memory, it was easy to do those updates, and they were over the internet. I did not have to connect a computer to it via USB cable and such
