Esoteric N-01

Just heard a direct comparison between the Lumin S1 and the NO 1...I have an NO 1 on its way. As a long time Lumin A1 owner I was surprised at the difference. Adding the Nordost V2 power cord improved things even more. Good luck.
 
N01 has the horsepower for DSD512 and the latest AKM DAC chips. It weighs 26kg. Lumix S1 is limited to DSD128. It weighs 10kg. Together with all the other numbers just screams that N01 is the better performer, by a long way.
 
Very interesting. I used to have a lumin A1 and sometimes I am missing it..( didn't keep it because could not be used as a standalone DAC)
So if N01 is way better...

As the esoteric uses the lumin app, does it mean spotify which lumin now supports will work also streaming spotify into the Esoteric N01?
 
Spotify connect is now supported natively by N01 with recent firmware update. The Spotify control point will see N01 as a Spotify source on the network. You don't need any other hardware for this to work, just your Spotify App on iOS or web-browser or whatever.

Just as Tidal has been in financial woes, now just read that spotify may be in trouble over a huge copyright lawsuit!


I wonder if it is hard for manufacturers to get other streaming services implemented or added at a later stage should anything terriblehappen.
 
Spotify have been trying to up-sell me to discounted annual membership. Makes me wonder how viable they are. I will stay on month by month.

I don't hear any difference between Spotify streaming and playing the same CD to the RCA input of N01. In other words, no point spinning CD any more when Spotify provides the same quality sound, but with endless variety of content available, and far more convenient than spinning CD.
 
That's great to hear, which transport are you using the N01 with or compare Spotify streaming.

Tidal Hifi would provide another 2 steps up in performance!
 
I have a PS Audio Directstream Memory Player and a Kaleidescape M700 player. Spotify network playback on N01 sounds as good as Kaleidescape, and better than the PS Audio.

I am also getting comparable streams via Tidal to my K-01x and have all along considering a n-01 to simplify when MQA became ready, which is right now:)
 
N01 would sound better than K01X. Better DAC chips, much better S/N and lower THD.

Whether my MacBook playing Spotify via USB to the N01 compared to the N01 native Spotify support, that is much closer comparison. I would say very slightly in favour of native support in the N01 sounding better, certainly it is better not to need the computer any more.
 
In a Hong Kong forum someone bought TEAC CG-10M (MSRP JPY148,000 before tax in Japan) for use with N-01 and reported a positive result. Both are 50 ohm - so a 50 ohm cable should be used.
 
Esoteric has released network module firmware 10.1i that improves the N-01 MQA sound quality due to improved DAC-side correction.
 
I have seen a few instances of N-01 changing input source by itself. I'd be listening to the source on RCA input and then it will switch itself over to Network input with nothing playing. Has anybody else seen this behaviour with their N01?
 
Any network-initiated playback may cause the behavior you describe, such as AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Roon, OpenHome, UPnP, etc.

Please also check whether your family has a Spotify installation on their (mobile) devices. Spotify Connect allows them to take control of your N-01 any time any where via the Internet, away from your home.

Next time this happens, observe what the front panel says. Also press the front panel + to check the playback status.
 
I just tested your theory and yes, you're correct. Spotify will show the N01 as an available device even if the input source on the N01 is not network.
 
I need help to diagnose an issue with my N-01.
The NETWORK input is not working.
Spotify and Esoteric SoundStream do not see the N01 on the network.
The N-01 LAN port is visually indicating traffic (1G link light steady green, other green light blinking away).
The N-01 is connected to a managed switch. The switch webUI is correctly showing the MAC of the N-01 on the port it is connected to, and the port statistics show that data is flowing on that port.
FING network scanning tool identifies the N-01 on the network, but reports no IP.
I have done a "factory reset" of the N-01 as per page 20 of the owners manual.

What else can I try?
 
Shut everything down and reboot one at a time from the router forward. Don't get impatient let every piece completely re-set before moving to the next with the iPad last. Didn't you have similar network issues with both of your DSD pieces? Seems you may have a network problem and not a streamer problem.
