on the other hand, there are other parts of this hobby that i find quite enjoyable: the tinkering, research, learning, experimenting, etc with new or different types of gear and technologies. there is still plenty of fun to be had in this area. it is always the journey rather than the destination -- right?

just curious about the thinking of others on the topic ...that and maybe just looking to give myself permission to indulge further.

Totally get that—sometimes the system is already good enough for pure enjoyment, and chasing upgrades won’t really change the musical connection.


But the tinkering, experimenting, and learning side of the hobby is a big part of the fun too, so there’s nothing wrong with indulging that curiosity.
 
I completely agree that constantly upgrading equipment can become an expensive cycle with little real satisfaction. Keeping a system for 19 years shows patience and confidence in what truly matters: enjoying the music. That mindset is refreshing. By the way, getting Minecraft free was a nice bonus. I recently explored crystal launcher android and it reminded me that simple, enjoyable experiences often matter more than endless upgrades.

Can't see me ever stopping. I enjoy the chase. I'm in a good place now, quite enjoyable but I know what sound I want to make it better.

Can't do separates anymore. Been there, done that. Joseph Audio, Luxman, Pass Labs, Conrad Johnson, Shunyata, etc. Lost all my stuff in the Ruidoso, NM Sandy Fork fire two years ago. Was selling it all so that took care of that. Have moved to a much nicer house so it all worked out quite well in the end. Thank you Allstate. Bought a top Sony A9 TV, a Sennheiser Ambeo Pro Plus soundbar with a SVS micro sub. Excellent sound. Highly recommend this speaker combo. Had been using KEF LSX LT speakers for background listening. Decided to try Qobuz using the soundbar. Raise my rent! Extremely surprised and content. Can listen at high volumes. Quite clean, transparent and emotionally involving. Done. Thanks for reading. Just because you’ve been to the mountain’s summit doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the view on the descent.
 
Live on a summit now of sorts. One of the highest points in Ruidoso. Spectacular, five star views. If this house burns down, gonna buy a nice condo in Colorado and call it good. Best.

You do you! I have considered combining some components (like getting a McIntosh receiver and getting rid of the separates), but I will never get rid of my "system", because it is a point of enjoyment for me.

Rex you sound like me 5 years ago. I still have a collection I roll in and out for fun, but for the most part I listen to my SPL Stack.

Did you reduce your system? I'm sure you've seen where i'm triamping. Its such a mess. And such a distraction from just enjoying music.

So funny you want to leave texas and go to wyoming. Everyone I know is going to Texas. I want a place in florida. I'm a big fisherman.

It’s kind of a good thing that different people value different things. There would be many boring (and crowded!) places if everyone wanted the same environment. Personally, I had to go to TX fairly frequently for work and was always glad to get home. I never felt any desire to live there. Same with FL. To each his own.

We moved to Kansas for affordability, health care (a hidden secret is how amazing the health care is here in Kansas, vastly better than what we had in California), and 4 seasons. It gets a little cold in winter and very hot in summers (this year has been over the top insane). Almost no snow and definitely windy.

Meeting many other people has not been easy since we have been dealing with my wife's health issues. Been a bit hard to get out. Meet a few folks at guitar shops, but another member referred to this area as an audio desert waste land. I would have to agree. One thing I miss about California is our fantastic audio club!

I did to a degree, but could not bring myself to part with some of my gear, so it went into a spare bedroom and when I get the bug I will roll out the tube amp's. The SPL gear is very compact (half size components) so it takes up less space. and I still have separates. I did try a couple of All In One integrateds and ended up either selling or giving them to one of my adult children.

Wichita is a fun little town, I am up there on business a lot our company is big in Aerospace, Rail and Ag. A couple good Jazz bars in the old town section..

Sounds like Florida, Tennessee or the Carolinas are calling your name. Would say Texas but it's to Hot in the summer. Hell I went for a 6 mile run at 5:00 am and it was 90...
 
I have thought about consolidating my system a bit. Maybe selling my Mc gear and getting a receiver. Maybe selling my DAC and using the better Mc DAC module... Probably will sell my Woo headphone amp and get something more compact. I have thought about getting some compact gear, maybe another Hattor passive pre, compact amp... not sure what..., maybe compact Mc phono stage :). So far just thoughts bouncing around in my head :).
