Does your sound system include a tuner?

Does anyone have any idea as to the audio quality of FM versus Internet Radio?

Bud-there is simply no comparison between the two. Internet radio quality blows in comparison to good quality FM broadcasts.

I used a Terk until I went with an internet based tuner and it worked quite well. I still have the Terk and I could sell it.

I use a Magnum Dynalab MD 806 and it pulls in a lot of stations without any noise. That said, I still think that analog FM has superior sound...if the signal strength is good and there are no multipath issues. Also, the number of listenable FM stations is limited in San Francisco. One must pick his compromises, I guess.

a.wayne.......Most of the Terk antennas are amplified and tend to be a bit noisy. Not only are the little internal amps designed very cheaply but amplifying off the air signals also amplifies any noise that may be present in the signal. You would be much better off to use a passive omni-directional antenna whether it's installed indoors or outdoors. An antenna that delivers good reception for me in my rural area is the Magnum Dynalab ST-2 FM antenna. The ST-2 works well mounted inside, maybe behind a window curtain or to a baseboard in the corner. It is an excellent performer when installed outdoors as well. The ST-2 antenna delivers 2.5dB of gain and comes with 24 feet of coaxial cable pre-terminated with F-connectors. I have two of them, one each for my MR88 and MR85 tuners.

They are available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Magnum-Dynalab-ST-2-FM-Antenna/dp/B003ETW2F0/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

Interesting thanks for the tip ....

Listened to "The Merry Wives of Windsor" today on Saturday Afternoon at the Opera via CBC Radio 2 from Windsor (interestingly enough), Ontario - absolutely superb quality. You'll notice the antenna rotator is indicating 160degrees; Detroit is one of the only places in the US where Canada is actually south. :weird:

Small world Don....

I usually listen to:

CBC Radio 2 89.9

WKAR simulcast on Oakland U. 90.5

WRCJ 90.9

All the best,

Steve.......Your Sansui TU-919 looks to be in mint condition. There was a lot of competition between Kenwood, Sansui, Pioneer, and Sony when those tuners were being sold. Sansui always seemed to be right there at the top. Be sure and use a quality FM antenna with the TU-919 to get the very best performance. Happy listening.

Thanks Dan. It is in beautiful condition, with no discernible wear on the toggles, buttons or dial! Everything works perfectly and has been gone through and given a complete bill of health. There are some minor scratches on the top rear from where my friend had another component sitting atop, but they are not enough to motivate me to sand and refinish, yet. I'm only using a little three foot "T" shaped antenna wire that I draped on some acoustic panels. I haven't even moved the antenna around for the best reception, but I will play with that. I think I'll order a passive omni-directional with an MD ST-2, as described above. Lucky for me, my favorite station broadcasts from very close and I'm quite taken with the sound quality I'm already getting!

Steve.......I am happy for you. I have always believed a tuner is a valuable source component in a sound system. I enjoy my tuners nearly every day.
