Do Y connectors count ? Wire question

Okay, so moving closer to the dark side, I am moving to higher end cables (thanks to Doug I have 1m cables and I am ordering the longer ones I need)

But I have a question about Y-connectors. I have to have a Y out from my pre to feed my power amp and my sub (sub out is defeated on my Marantz when I use pre-out).

so say I have High end cables to the sub and high end cables to the power amp...but they are fed by a $5 Y connector as first in the chain, does that defeat the whole thing or is it negligible because its so short ?

I guess it would be comparable to a high end cable length with one end having a cheap $1 connector on one end and a $50 connector on another..will it matter ?

Yes, everything matters IMO. I faced a similar situation and Jeff got me some cables which were 1-2 type and cost less (or about the same) as a decent Y connector.

unfortunately it does matter. in fact some high end cable manufactures are saying that the way the wire is connected / soldered / crimped to the end makes a big difference. I have no way of knowing since I've never compared connection types. I have used various Y connectors in headphone applications from the source to amp and found the simple audioquest to be one of the best sounding but still not as good as with no Y.

I kind of thought so....And I have a switch box too so I can select which power amp I want to use so I am sure that impacts also...

So going to rewire/recable today. Elimination of anything except the straight runs....

As a test or permanently?

What brand cables do you have? Many will make custom Y cables for you without having to use a cheap Y adapter.

Yes, I have tried a switch box also and found a Y connector to be better than a switch box. Of course multiple Ys are worse than a switch box. Sucks mostly because changing cables is a big pain in the .......

Okay, I completely rewired my system

ALL Y Connectors and switch boxes - GONE
1M cables replaced with the high end ones Doug sent me (thanks again)
Phonostage cable (12ft) to the pre is a mediabridge double shielded
Subwoofer cable is also mediabridge (turns out sub pre out DOES work)

Result - I do notice an improvement in detail - maybe 5% ? But an increase nonetheless..

Oh God...I have gone to the dark side..How will I ever live with myself...LOL

I find that a 5% improvement is equal to a 20% reduction after you get used to the improvement if you ever take it out. Stupid high end math.

Rob, just another mention here. ...At the other end of your sub (RCA input jacks), there too use a Y connector,
so that both L & R input RCA jacks are used (plugged in).

Why? You'll add some gain, plus no chance of noise escaping from an unused input RCA jack, and contaminating somewhere down the line.

Not clear on what you mean ...I have a SUB PRE OUT on my preamp going to the SINGLE IN side of my sub ..you are saying put a splitter there that the single line in feeds both L and R sub inputs ? Why?

I have to tell you originally, I split my pre-outs to a y with one side going to the power amp, other sides to the L&R of the sub)

Not sure which sounded better but I may try what you suggested...

To all, thanks again.

Yes, I am a believer.

It is a relaxing room.

And yes, a 5% increase would be a 20% reduction if it was gone...LOL

Never mind Rob; your sub has only a 'single' LFE input jack. ...You're good to go; no Y connector at this entrance. :)
{My subs are from the older variety.}

* Better yet; show me a picture of your sub's rear. ...Don't have to take a picture, just the exact same model from the Internet.
