Deer - Close Call

On my way home from dinner in Lake City this evening and a deer shot out of the tree line. Lucky for me and the oncoming vehicle the deer changed his mind. I saw it in time to hit the brakes and I don't think I would have hit the deer, but if the other vehicle had hit the deer it would have most likely have bounced back in my lane. At 55 mph it would have torn up the front of my new Tahoe. I got lucky. Sorry about the sun beaming straight into the camera lens but it was late afternoon and I was headed west.

I hit a deer a few years ago with my bike 3 in the afternoon in the pouring rain. The two bikes traveling with me said it went right over my head the bike beside me avoided running into me the one behind also got under the deer before it came down. I stayed up right and stayed on the road used both lanes and ditches to do it. Killed the deer and 3,500 damage to my front end rode it home . One wrist still hurts when it rains. I was in Penn state area when it happened. I thought I was going to miss it but it turned and I nailed it just ahead of the hip. The guy beside me was on a chopper he would not have done as well hitting a deer. A hell of a shock thru the bike when it hit gotta love a HD heavy and tough.

Garth.......Glad you survived that deer collision. I loved my 100th Anniversary HD Screamin Eagle Deuce, too. Thankfully I never collided with a deer while riding it. I often thought about it as I was tooling along on country roads but I remained fortunate. Glad you're still here to tell us your story.

The 1080p HD camera is a neat little vehicle DVR. The powered base mounts to the windshield glass and the camera snaps in and out of the base. The camera records GPS data and speed to a micro SD card. I keep a 32GB memory card in the camera. When full it records over the oldest files. You can make the file size 1 minute, 3 minutes, or longer. The picture quality is great, not counting the sun directly in the lens, and it has excellent low light capability. I have the camera base mounted behind the rearview mirror so I barely see the camera bottom. It powers on with the ignition so it is always recording when I am driving. It is a tiny unit and fits in the palm of my hand. I am thinking of adding a second one to record the rearview.

I hit a deer in upstate New York in a rental car. It came out of nowhere and turned right in front of me. It hit sideways where the windshield meets the roof, went over the car, landed in the median, groggily got up, and staggered back into the woods. At that point I realized I didn't spill any McDonalds coffee I had in my hand. Later in the hotel bar I was telling this story and one local said I was lucky it didn't come through the windshield since it probably would have kicked me to death. Other than knocking the roof cloth loose, it didn't appear to do any car damage. At least the rental company never bothered me.

Dan, first, thank goodness nothing happened. Second, this is a brilliant device. No disputes in a traffic incident. I will get one for my truck. Far too many crazy people driving down the wrong side of the street - especially during season.

Lastly, having lived in Canada for 36 years, I had my share of incidents. But the scariest one for me was here in Florida. Late at night I was driving down the road and there were no lights on the road, just my headlights. When out of the bushes along the side of the road came an alligator scurrying across the road right in front of me. I slammed on the brakes - narrowly missing it. I still remember the alligator stopping and staring right at me before continuing on across the other side of the road.

Dan, first, thank goodness nothing happened. Second, this is a brilliant device. No disputes in a traffic incident. I will get one for my truck. Far too many crazy people driving down the wrong side of the street - especially during season.

Mike.......Having video of your driving events is valuable insurance providing you are not the culprit. It can work against you just as easily as for you. Having the camera and knowing it is capturing GPS data and speed tends to help keep me aware of my driving habits.

Clean your glass with alcohol where you intend to mount the base. The camera is fully adjustable for angle and fits in the base very snug. I chose to not leave mine on 24/7 with motion activation. I wired mine to come on and go off with the ignition. Tonight when I got home I just removed it from the base and brought the camera in the house, removed the micro SD card from the camera, put the micro SD card in an SD card adaptor and plugged it into my computer. I keep a micro SD to SD card adaptor in the vehicle just in case I ever need to allow the cops to view my video on their car laptops. My hope is to never have a need for the recordings.

The alligator near miss sounds scary. I'd hate to hit one of those monsters.

Deer are very unpredictable! Glad you avoided an incident Dan.

I too have a deer > car story and suffice it to say I was lucky to have it work out to be fairly minor considering I was traveling 70 mph when the deer popped over the guard rail and hit the passenger side of the car I was driving.
