Debut Albums

It's my impression that debut album is more what a band originally sounded like. Some bands maintain a certain sound it seems though that often after the debut the industry tries to mold them or polish up the next album. When I learn about a band new to me I always like to check out the first album to get a feel for where they came from.

In some cases the change is welcome due to the debut not being so good or that well accepted.

What do you think?

I think it's a mixed bag, in that sometimes the debut album turns out to be one of their best and you hear influences of it in the later albums. While sometimes it's easy to hear improvement/quality in later albums, as well as a growth away from their beginnings.

Hmmm, and then there is Ministry. Hard to explain this band, but I like both flavors. Al Jourgensen is one of a kind. If you like the debut album, check out "The Squirrely Years Revisited".
