This is my first attempt at getting a dedicated laptop for feeding my ayre dx5 dac. I am looking more towards a windows pic, please advise what to order and what not to order, thx.

J Rivers is what I am using and it works like a charm. However I started with Windows PC now with MAC and I found the MAC does it way better than Windows .

In my case on both. Works better and easier to use ( on my windows need to download some other software but not on Mac )and sound quality was superior vs Windows too

There are also alternatives to using a general purpose computer, and some say they are better. For example, while I currently use the Lumin S1, I started with a Bryston BDP-1. Basically, it is a dedicated Linux computer optimized for playing digital files. Plus, it looks a lot better in the rack than a computer.

I think a dedicated file server is probably the best audio component I have ever had. Once you have ripped CDs, and/or downloaded files, you can just listen for hours of uninterrupted music.

Whatever choice you make, have fun.

I have a small, dedicated, fanless, computer for sale that was built just to serve music files to my DAC. It has windows 7 Operating system, runs JRiver, and controlled remotely with my iPad. Only reason for sale... I built a second one in a different case. If you're interested ping me.

I suggest a custom C.A.P.S. Powered by a external Linear Power Supply. Example below is my current server setup. I use JRiver v.20.

If you're not stuck on Mac or PC, check out an Aurender X100L (if you don't have a NAS) or N100H (if you do have a NAS).

Hi Solecky,

If you are planning on going the personal computer route, I would say Mac Mini all the way. I've had mine for two years and it's wonderful. If you are thinking of going the dedicated music server route, I would definitely say Aurender. These units offer outstanding performance and we're lucky to have an Aurender dealer right here on Audio Shark (Mike).

Best of luck,
Ken
