Component stands

My experience (and wallet) tends to agree, Mike.

Do you think wood finishes, in particular the thickness of the finish on a given wood base (e.g., multiple layers of polyurethane vs. a thin lacquer vs. oiled finish) would or could make a difference?

I don't believe so. I'll tell you an interesting stand: the one from Raidho. It follows a great balance of resonance control and dissipation without complete isolation.

No one uses cardboard boxes. But compare a solid wood stand to something costing 20 times more. Over the long term, you might be surprised.

Mike I have, trust me, if i thought about & considered that it would make a difference to the sound, I've put my source on it. The reference to the cardboard box was serious, simply because everything makes a difference. Whether the system is capable of rendering the smaller differences is in the micro & macro.
If you ask me what i would consider at the top of my list it'd be wood & sorbathane, also love Stillpoints under my speakers & amps

I always wondered how much difference a rack would make. Then one year I went to a seminar by Roy Gregory at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. He basically goes through a demonstration on how different things affect the sound. When he switched the racks, it just floored me. I had no idea that a rack could make so much a difference.

Gorgeous rack! Any idea how much it costs?

Those SGR Racks are beautiful Kev! I mentioned wood as a preference earlier, but including sorbothane (or other advanced polymer) like the SGR design incorporates would take performance to another level.....and, they have an allowance for sand fillable legs too. Sweet.

Do these ship from the factory with sand filled legs or do you provide your own silica?

Mike, mine came with the fill & yes I noticed the difference straight away from the rack of silence. I have different numbers of sorbothane pucks for the different weights as the amps are pretty heavy compared to some....

Mike-It's the SRA Scuttle rack. It just arrived last Tuesday. It weighs 450 lbs in the wooden crate. Finally I have a home for all my gear.

I have found good success with this rack in my Chicago system. The smaller "A" rack is $1700 and the bigger "B" rack is $1900 retail. They have ceramic ball bearings between each level. They are stable. The "B" rack is heavy and hard to park by yourself.
