I received this in the mail today--most enjoyable! I hear distinct echos of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, but he also has his own "thing" going on. I own only one other recording of Toch's music, his Cello Sonatas, which I also enjoy, so perhaps I need to investigate more of his music. This is an SACD even though the cover lacks the logo. Excellent sound and performances.
Mostly classical with occasional forays into jazz and classic rock (Hendrix and Deep Purple especially ). Most of my listening is via SACD unless I have a better RBCD version. I own maybe 100 LPs, but I don't listen to them very often.
My goodness, Ms. Grimaud has scored a knockout with this release! This is easily one of the best 1st Concertos that I have heard and a darn fine 2nd, too. A pity that DG doesn't make SACDs anymore, as while this sounds quite good, I can only imagine how much better it would be in m-ch SACD. (Another alternative would be if BIS, Pentatone, or Channel Classics had recorded them with these artists!)
I have no doubt John, some of my favorite classical music is from DG and on CD.
...Got few digital DG LPs too but I prefer the analog CDs. ...Those digital records (LPs) sound terrible! ...Irritating.
Vibrant performances with detailed sound to match. As a bonus, if one understands German, which I don't, there is a second disc on which the conductor discusses the music.
