Jock and I got together for the second time in the last couple of weeks to hear the Dag and the Classe' amps, and to compare them. The first time we did the comparison was at Jock's house driving the fabulous Raidho D3's. The second time was at my house driving my beloved Revel Salon 2's.
I'll only speak for myself,Jock can give his own thoughts. I thought both amps shared a lot of the same things. Both amps had very good bass, and good control over it. Clean, clear treble. A sweetness to the high frequencies that I find in live music. Very good soundstage width. The most surprising thing to me was how alike the amps were in the tonality of the music, in this area the two amps sounded like they were from the same company !!
Ok, I have to admit that the Dag amp was better,in some very important areas. Soundstage depth was much better through the Dag. Vocals came a little more forward in a pleasing way. The music flowed as a whole piece, meaning that the listening experience was more about the song than the gear. There also seemed to be a better sense of control of complex musical passages. In rock music, the many sounds and instruments gong on seemed more independent, with less blurring of sounds. Overall the Dag amp was the best I've heard driving my Salon 2's.
The differences I've described are real, but they aren't huge in my mind. When Jock went home and I started listening to the Classe'-Revel combo again, I was absolutely thrilled with it. The Dag amps are better, but the Classe' mono's are still very, very good and I would recommend them highly to anyone !!
This was Jock's first time to hear Salon 2's in a non-show environment. I think he was a little surprised !
