choosing the right synology

I have funny feelings about the cloud in terms of privacy. I see all those nude movie star pictures being posted. ( I mean I heard about those nude pictures). That's why I am inquiring about hard back up. But I am unclear if I need a second synology to do that (expensive) or attaching hard drives is almost as good.

Attaching external hard drives is just as good (& cheaper). If you already have one, you could use it for that purpose. Depending on the size of your RAID, you may need more than one external drive to fully backup everything important. External 4TB HDDs are now cheap.

I like to buy an external case with an eSata connector & put a 4Tb WD Green inside. Off the shelf USB3 external drive is OK too.

I don't go out of my way to use Cloud Storage. Maybe a few pics which get sunched across devices. Definitely not anything sensitive.

You can use your own Synology as a Cloudstation! It provides secure remote access without port forwarding & you can use it to selectively synch across your devices anywhere!!

Bill - if there is anything super crucial private - just stick it on a thumb drive or little portable drive if you don't feel comfortable backing it up to the cloud. Otherwise, it's tough to beat cloud data backup services.

Well, with that sentiment, I sure hope you don't have nude pictures/videos that you're sticking on your NAS and backing up to the cloud! :snicker:

That said, a combination of home NAS + Cloud (Crashplaze, Backblaze, etc) is a pretty solid architectural approach for ensuring your digital contents aren't going to get lost in the ether in the event of a hardware failure at home.

If you're technically capable, setting up a storage server with some older computer equipment + Linux + zfs RAID isn't a bad option. Cheaper than a purpose built NAS hardware solution.

Good luck!

Well I do not have any nude pictures but in the back of my mind is I really do not trust the security of things since it allows others nude pictures to be exposed. (hope that clarifys the fact I am not a nude
audiophile......"nudoaudiophilist"). Yes I am capable of throwing a NAS together but I am planning in the future of downloading and sending to a dac for my 2 channel and I was concerned about "noise"
if I just whipped something up.

ok back to the 1513+ How does it work with the macbook pros in terms of backup. Or should I get a separate time machine?

Synology 1513+ has Mac File Service, Time Machine, & Bonjour Printer Broadcast. I like the Bonjour print server b/c it allows me to print from IOS devices to my Dell IP colour laser printer.

I've been using 2ea old DS1511+ units for several years now.
Both have around 5TB usable, High-Rez audio files are automatically backed up each evening between the two units.

Typically get 500-800 Mbit transfer rates on large files. (e.g. audio) I do regular backups of the Audio files to individual hard drives.
The one thing I've not yet done is begin some off-site backup strategy.

Both of these units are on 24X7X365...and have worked flawlessly for years. knock-on-wood.....

I read something about a synology 1514 becoming available this year. Has anyone else heard this?

So I am ready to pull the trigger on a NAS and decided to put my fears aside and do the cloud. The only thing making me hold back is what Steve answered. I will wait a few months

Bill

So Chris, with RAID, is it really 15TB? No. Get your facts straight.

Mike I am a fan of Synology as I use one to back up my Macs but the 1513 seems like way over kill, considering what he is asking for. Sure Disk space is cheap but that unit alone with "Zero" disks is $769 dollars and based off what he is asking for I would say it's like shooting a misquote with a shotgun! ;) Well after reading all the computers he has the 1513 would be a good choice, so I retract my above statement!<<<<<<<<<:)

Bill13: The best cloud is your own personal one you have the most control over. Not a fan of it, and never will be, I would rather pay for storage space via a hard drive and manage my own data.

I disagree. Why are people arguing with me? When Bill came to my house and explained what he wanted to store - full backups of multiple computers, music, etc. I gave him a sound recommendation.

As music moves more and more to digital download, space will become even more important.

Look, I don't give a crap what he buys. I was just offering my opinion.

Bill - buy a 1GB thumb drive. That seems to be all people think you will need.

Christ...

Mike,

I guess you didn't read my whole post! LOL After I finally read what he was looking for at the begging of the thread wanting to back up multiple computers etc... I retracted my statement below in the thread you replied too, I think you missed that part! ;)

"Well after reading all the computers he has the 1513 would be a good choice, so I retract my above statement!<<<<<<<<<:)" and who is arguing? I was totally agreeing with your reccemendation!..... and a 1GB thumb drive does't cut it for me either. :snicker:

You must have just added the second part. I was responding to what I quoted in my post above.

Mike,

I put my response in and then I looked at the first original post from what he was looking for, I added the other part about a few minutes later after I read his post. I thought he was only looking for music files not multiple computers, so your recommendations I thought were spot on.

Well if you including backing up computers with pictures, software, video files, especially Blu-Ray burns you can fill up space pretty quickly. If your just using it for music you won't need nearly as much space of course.
