Bruce Springsteen remastered from the tapes

Ah sh*t.... was so looking forward to this, from the clip above, which is very, very misleading, I assumed it was from the master tapes....... bugger!!!!
Then again just watched it again & it does say at 1:52 that "Newly transferred from the analogue masters". The plot thickens.

I read it the same way you did, Kev. Have to say, it is misleading.

Rob, what did you read/hear that confirmed the vinyl is cut from digital?

Read the interview portion with Bob Ludwig who did the mastering. It's digital.

With the exception of the specialty labels that we can trust (and Myles listed who those are in another thread), you have to assume that most LP reissues are being cut from a digital file. Many of the reissues mention that it was "sourced" from the master tapes, they just neglect to tell you that it was via a digital conversion from the master tapes. Caveat Emptor is the rule of the day.

True! And I can't believe how bad some sound. Meanwhile, others sound quite good. It's sadly a crap shoot.

And even when done correctly as Born to Run was by Jimmy Iovine and Greg Calbi, Bruce's musical style does not lend itself to production masterpieces. My wife who grew up and went to college in Pa. heard him and his rival Southside Johnny many dozens of times live and to this day he is her favorite artist. She says that the sound projected on the albums is what he wants and is a reflection of how he sounds live. He is not about pristine production. Born to Run was Columbia's "make it or break" effort with him so they gave him the "big guns" for one final try. Luckily for them all he hit it out of the park sales wise.

Re: Bruce Springsteen remastered from the tapes (Tunnel of Love)

Nope, not the Classic. Just your run-of-the-mill standard issue. I'll check the leadouts tonight.

John

Both sides are handwritten, as opposed to stamped, which I believe is significant. The jacket has the gold stamped promo designation on the back, upper right corner.

side 1: AL-40999-1A G2 DMM MASTERDISK E11
side 2: BL-40999-1A G5 MASTERDISK - DMM D35

The original run was 33795 and they mastered by Greg Calbi and engineered by Jimmy Iovine in 1975. Your Masterdisk copy may have been "touched" by BL at a later date.

I'd assume this is a late reissue because it was cut using DMM.

Re: Bruce Springsteen remastered from the tapes (Tunnel of Love)

Huh? I believe we have our signals crossed. I'm writing about "Tunnel of Love" which came out in '87.

John

What I was referring to was the DMM/Direct Metal Mastering. That didn't come about until much later, far after the original release.

Right, but I think your "'75 and engineering/mastering references" were to "Born to Run", rather than ToL, correct?
