Boardwalk Empire – A real life connection

We will not be selling any of it and I offered Mariska copies if we don't arrange for her to see the whole collection herself. Whenever we do communicate, we will also ask for a signed pic of herself to include in the collection. I am counting on personal communication from her in the next few weeks.....after she and Ice-T run a background check on us :) to verify we are not stalkers.

When we get close to death, we will most likely will them all to the Historical Society or Museum for all to see and not just sit in a collectors closet.

Mrs. Mariska is a class act, getting a signed pic from her will require little to no effort.
Oh yeah, that's right we are talking Det. Olivia Benson and crew after all! Once your cleared, then they need to get the Ok from Capt. Kregan to take the case.:)

Well the reply was not as expected. We got a reply an hour ago from Mariska's assistant. It relayed that although she appreciated us reaching out to her, she had no time or way to meet with us to see the collection due to travel and set restrictions filming SVI. She then offered to but the pictures from us.

We just replied with a simple offer to send her a copy of each picture in exchange for a few signed by her and one saying something personal about the pictures to add to the provenance of the collection.

Waiting for the response.................

Well, I did say that the response could be through her assistant. Too bad she did not write to you personally. Meeting with you to see the pics was not going to happen, I assure you. Yes, she is still very involved in SVU and has even now directed two episodes! So yes, she is very busy.
Perhaps she may want the originals and maybe not. She may send you some standard autographed pics, I don't know. Perhaps you could keep the copies and ask what she wants to pay for the originals and then maybe you can ask her to write you a short thank you note or something, that would still give you the provenance.

Something to keep in mind about autographs and their value. A simple signed picture is worth more than one with a personal inscription addressed to an individual. Don;t know why, but that's what they always say on those reality shows.

Maybe because nobody wants to buy an autograph addressed to someone else.

Thanks for that Bob. That will probably make the Dean Martin - Frank Sinatra pic worth more. I really wasn't expecting Mariska to offer to buy them from us, no price discussed. There are some sites that sell this kind of stuff with items going in the $6K range for each pic of Jayne, and those ore standard Publicity Media shots, not personal 1-of-a-kind pics.

Overall, I am not so much concerned about the value. None of it is for sale and I don't need the money it is worth at this time. It's all for the history and preservation of family memories. I am sure my Wife's Uncle would be so happy we are bringing his world and stories back to life after his death in 1973. He also may have had a son that nobody really knows much about and we will be attempting to track him down as soon as we get some old paperwork from my wife's mother like birth and death certificates and more. We would love to be able to share all this with a long lost unknown cousin.

Latest update

After we got the first reply back from Mariska's assistant, we wrote back to say we would be happy to send her copies of the pictures in exchange for a few back from her and at least one with a personal inscription after seeing the pics we send. That way we can add the pics of Mariska to those of her mother in the collection.

Just before we left for vacation last Saturday, we got a response back that she would love to have the copies and would be more than happy to send some autographed and inscribed back to us for the collection.

When we get back from vacation, I will get the copies made and send them off to the address they gave us. We are now anxious to see what we get back in return. So even if we don't get to meet or speak personally to Mariska, it is very cool that we were able to get this close and be able to share with her 50 years later as well as have something personal from her to add to the pics of Jayne and the overall collection.

Well, there ya go Brian! I or anyone could have told you there was no chance you would meet Mariska.
I don't know if the second response was from her assistant or not, but it doesn't matter because the nature and wording of the response states that Mariska herself read your letters at some point! I hope that one of the pictures she sends you is not only autographed by her own hand, but has a personal inscription instead of a generic one. There is a chance Brian! There may also be a chance of a brief note from her, maybe written by her assistant or herself (less likely), but either way you'll have your provenance!

So we got home from vacation Sunday and had our mail delivered Monday. In it was a package with a personally signed pic from Mariska to my wife.

I made the copies yesterday and got our package ready just before it arrived. We were hoping she would have waited and said something about what we are sending, so hoping she still does after getting her package.

Well, 1 out of 2 so far. Good to hear that Mariska made the autograph personal in her own hand. Be sure to send a nice thank you note with the pics. Perhaps that may help generate a higher chance of her saying something.

So as noted above, I had made the copies of the 5 pictures and we mailed them to the given address. Turns out to be the house in NY that the actors and workers stay in during the week while shooting L&O. We got a message from Mariska's assistant that the package had arrived but they were all working long hours but Mariska would get them before heading home for the weekend. We had asked that after she sees the pics, if she could write a personal note or on another pic, to say something about the pictures for us. Since we got no pushback from her assistant, we figure it will just be a matter of time before we receive something back from Mariska.

We also booked a night at the Tropicana Casino, 4/21, so we can spend 2 days in Atlantic City researching more. So many people that we contacted or just mentioned things to suggested we speak with the owner of the Princeton Antiques and Book Shop in AC. He has one of the oldest and longest operated shops there and has a whole collection of 500 Club Memorabilia of his own. He is the guy that outright offered to buy our collection without ever seeing it during the first phone call we made to him. We want to see what he would offer, which will give us a low end insurance number and he should be able to help us figure out who some of the people are we don't have signatures for, or that are in the pics with Skinny D'Amato, the owner of the 500.

So day 1 we will visit the Antique shop and owner after stopping off at the Renault Winery on the way. One of the 2 or 3 wineries in the US that can actually put Champagne on the labels of their fantastic Blueberry Champagne that uses local Hamonton Blueberries.

Day 2 we have appointments with the Archivist of the Heritage Collection at the AC Library (which is also the owners of the AC Historical Museum on the Boardwalk) as well as the Curator of the museum. They are very interested to see what we have and are very keen to help us find whatever they can as far as addresses of Uncles shops and homes and more from microfilm or several other means and records they house. We will then travel to the Museum itself to see the displayed collection of 500 Club items they have there.

As far as finding the lost cousin, all we really have at this point is Uncles Birth and Death certificates. We are hoping that finding addresses and dates will help us then search Census Records and Birth Certificates and if the archivist does not have Birth Certs, I am sure they will point us in the right direction as they seem to really want to help us out from all conversations.

When my wife was booking our room, she mentioned a few things to the person on the other end. The woman turned out to be a Black woman who lived in AC all her life and remembered much of the story and more. When my wife mentioned Sammy Davis, the woman corrected her to say he got his big start in fame from The Harlem Club which was at the other end of AC and was a Breakfast Club and showcased all the Black performers of the day while the 500 was considered a Dinner Club. The woman also knew Robert from the Antique shop and again touted his knowledge, kindness, and the fact that he makes reasonable offers for items of value.

Our plan right now is to pass it all to the children or grand children of the lost cousin if we can find him. If not, we will most likely will it to the Historical Society and Museum as long as we do not become destitute and need the money.

I hope the next update is that we got something back from Mariska. Otherwise I will update this thread after our trip to AC.

The fact that you are no longer getting push back from Mariska's assistant points out that Mariska herself is involved now to a degree and it's just a matter of schedule and time. Things will still flow through her assistant due to time constraints and all that.

WOW!

So guess who called last night?

We were just chilling and watching the 2nd to last Flyers game when the phone rang. We still have a basic land line for incoming calls and we just monitor who is calling before picking up. We get lots of robo calls still as well as ones where there is just nobody there.

So as the message began to screen, we hear "Carolyn, Hi"....and we looked at each other trying to figure out who it was calling. It continues with "It's Mariska Hargitay"....and the scene was like a cartoon where the legs are going a mile a minute but the body is still standing there. She continues with "I wanted to thank you" as my wife picked up the phone and put it on Speaker. Carolyn said hello and that I was also there. She went on to say how much she appreciated the pictures we sent and how she will cherish them and keep with her personal collection. She was also excited to share them with her siblings when they get together real soon. She remarked as to how handsome my wife's Uncle was as well as saying "The pictures are really something" with a tone that matches the outrageous pointed Falsies that her mother was wearing in the pics. (Madonna was not the first to wear cone shaped bras)

We spoke for about 5 minutes. We had asked if she shared them over Easter, but she said no because they were in Switzerland for the holiday and she had just opened and looked thru the package. We could hear how touched she was over the phone and she didn't sound a bit like Olivia Benson from the show.

Before politely begging off to put her youngest son to bed, she asked what we would like in return. We asked for a hand written note mentioning the pictures. She said she would be more than happy to do anything we asked for. We kept it simple.

We had a hard time sleeping last night. What a blast of an unexpected phone call for sure. We still have the beginning of the message on the machine, and I used my camera to make a short film of Mariska's signed pic next to one of Jayne while playing back the message for sound. Cheesy? Maybe, but some of the best cheese we have had lately.

More to come when we get her note and after the trip to AC in 2 weeks.

Cheers and I hope you are enjoying the ride along with me if your still reading this.

OMG! Brian!!!! Holy cow!! A personal phone call from Mariska (Olivia Benson)!!!! Did not see that one coming!!!
You must have felt like you were knocked out and trying to come to.
It looks like her assistant did everything right and Mariska took matters up from there. I have to say: What a class act!!!!!!!!
Plus the fact that it meant a lot to her, that's special.
Yes, hearing her in interviews she sounds nothing like Olivia Benson, she's very soft spoken.

Prepare yourself Brian, you may get something a bit extra with your request.

Thanks Eric. I have the feeling she was in control from my first email to her Foundation. She had to OK them giving me the Assistant's email back then.

We were so surprised and almost had no clue what to say. And of course the time flies so fast you can never get it all in.

I know. Surprised only begins to describe it I imagine. Like I said, you must still be swimming from that one.
It's just so great hearing from such a nice and genuine person, celeb or not.

We are also still so stoked that we were able to share 50 y/o pics of her parents with her. She was meant to have them and we were the conduit to make it happen. All the events leading up to this appear to be random, but I'm not so sure. My wife's Uncle and Mariska's parents must be smiling down from above.

Hi Brian,

It's amazing to read about all that has transpired from that photo discovery! That was extremely nice of Mariska to call you personally to thank you. She sounds like a wonderful and very down-to-earth person. Keep us posted with any new developments!

Thanks,
Ken

March 23[SUP]rd[/SUP] Update

My wife and I spent 2 days in Atlantic City New Jersey on our little Fact Finding Mission. We booked a room at the Tropicana Casino which was central to where we needed to be. The place is a dump! No good directions to be found and the place is huge so you have to walk miles to get anywhere. It took over an hour and a half to get our stuff to the room from Bell Service and at one point in time they had no idea where our stuff was. The room had a comfy bed and decent view of the ocean, but was dirty, dusty and was supposed to be a non-smoking floor. As soon as one steps off the elevator, all you smell is baked in smoke. Anyway, that rant and more was already sent to the Hotel Manager.

On Tuesday we met with Owner/Collector of the Princeton Antique and Book Store, which has been there for over 50 years. We met at his house as he was recovering from recent surgery but the store was only a block away. He was not much help in identifying any of the unknown’s we had but provided lots of help in other ways. After he heard of how much research I had already done, he was not in any position to make us an offer for the collection. We don’t want to sell it anyway. He was honest about the overall value and that it is only worth what a collector of these specific items wants to pay. Also there may be a shrinking time window since with each new generation, the people we have pics and autographs of become less familiar. As for the Frank and Dean signed pic, that will fetch a nice sum since there are many whacko Sinatra collectors. He had a copy of same pic but was part of a promotional picture souvenir item that you could open and place another pic inside. He did have a book of many old 500 Club pics and in one shot of the crowd from the stage while Sinatra performed, we found my wife’s uncle. We had several people in the store compare our pics to that and we were all 99% sure it was him in the audience.

He called the store and had his assistant look thru some old Polk Directories for my wife’s uncle and his businesses and residences and they found several entries and made copies for us. The Polks are a year by year local directory of people and businesses just like a phone book but without phone numbers.

He also recognized my wife’s uncle’s Lawyer from a newspaper clipping and the opening dedication of The American Academy of Beauty Culture along with the then Mayor Jackson. He called the lawyer but his memory and health is fading and he did not recall the time, but asked for a copy of the clipping to jog his memory so we will provide that to him shortly. That ended our search for day 1.

We walked around the Casino and people watched since we don’t gamble. The Tropicana has a shopping mall and large food court market, Hooters, Chickie’s & Pete’s and more. We had a few good brews and a burger at Chickie’s and Pete’s while watching the hockey playoffs and our loser Phillies on the many TVs in the place.

Wednesday was another very nice day and we started out with a nice breakfast and some boardwalk shopping before heading to the Library for assistance searching thru all the great data they have stored there. The Archivist was very helpful and we were able to find all of Uncles home addresses and businesses with addresses. He had 5 different businesses in AC and that many places of residence. We located them all on the maps and many are still there. She gave us many suggestions on searching for the unknown cousin as well as directing us to the Vital Statistics office close by. They could not help because we are not next of kin, nor did we have accurate names and dates to search on. They sent us to the Courthouse to get a Judge’s order to get records but we decided to wait on that til after more research.

All in all we came away with a ton of info and to thank the library for their help, we agreed to provide them scans of many of the pics and they will create both online and paper archive of my wife’s Uncle, Businesses, and also add to the 500 Club collection, which was slim. She was able to help us identify a person in one of the back room shots, which was a guy who later became Mayor of AC only to go to jail before his term ended. All the political deals of the time were conducted in the back room of the 500.

While we continue the research, we are awaiting patiently the hand written letter from Mariska Hargitay that she promised to send us. We won’t bug her as she could be including other family members or better yet, putting together a little something special for us.

For now, most of the fun is over and we have to do some heavy searching to possibly find the lost cousin. I will update again if anything worth saying happens.

Cheers!

A little cheesy teaser of our phone message before we picked up
