this is the blue note records promotional video for their tone poet reissue series. fascinating video with lots of great info. several things in particular stood out:

1. don was of blue note went to joe harley and kevin gray of music matter jazz to produce the tone poet series ...and, from what i can tell the process, materials, etc. that they used are pretty much exactly the same those used for the MMJ reissues. for anyone who knows, i would love to know where there are any differences in the making of the two -- as well as how MMJ and tone poet LPs sound in comparison the each other.

2. in the original releases, RVG would bump up the upper-mids and roll off the low end so as to create LPs that were suitable for the record players and amplification of the era. these adjustments have been eliminated from the re-mastering of these new releases providing a truer representation of the tapes.

anyway, fun video - enjoy!

Thanks for posting. I have been a fan of the Tone Poet series. Great to get a "behind the scenes" view.

One of the biggest advantages of both the Tone Poet and BN80, now BN Classic series is that they own the music so none of these releases have to be limited in quantity.

Harley has done a great job finding older albums that hadn't gotten the white glove treatment with modern releases. That's what the Tone Poet series is all about. Add to that the Blue Note 80/Classic releases and you cover a lot of the great Blue Note music.

Thanks for posting. I like the Tone Poet series. The quality is excellent. Just wish they didn’t use those crummy sleeves. I throw them away and put in proper MOFI sleeves.

I like what Kevin Grey says about analog vs digital.

there are a couple of tone poet titles that i missed out on and which are now trading in the secondary market at astronomical prices. so, i am curious if anyone knows if/when any of the already issued tone poet LPs will be re-pressed?

OTOH if anyone has an unloved copy of either nigeria or it's time! let me know know
:)

The Tone Poets are not supposed to be a limited series issue so they should be repressed at some point. However, given the shortage of pressing capacity it is anyone's guess when that will happen.
