Best SET (300B, 845)?

I prefer the bigger power tube like the 211 and my Line Magnetic 219IA is making me a new an of the 845(driven by 310A ad 300B).

My favorite SET amps are the amps based around the Audio Note UK Ongaku design - (Gaku-On, Ongaku, Tomei, Jinro).

I did have chance to audition the wonderous sounding Shindo Petrus preamp with Audio Note UK Kegon monoblocks with AN E/Spx Alnico (Product of the year in Asia last year) and the owner who is a concert pianist now piano teacher played some stunning Direct to Disc Chinese Drum music that was jaw dropping.

My current plan (If I can somehow swing the money) is the M6 preamp with the power amp version of the Jinro or Tomei. The latter is less of a rush with the LM219 capable of being run as a dual mono power amp. Sanity may take over and I may just opt for an M2 and keep the LM219IA. LM also has a few preamps on the radar but I have to be sure the transformers are world wide capable like the Audio Notes because if I ever move back to the west I don't want to be stuck with paperweights.

I know it isn't in the same league as most of the gear mentioned in this thread, but I really like my Triode Corp TRV-845SE when used as a power amp with a solid state preamp.

When run as an integrated it can get a little too tubey and thick at the expense of detail and extension at both ends - using it as a power amp fixes that. You get the lovely SET goodness with the detail and extension of the solid state pre. I love it.

Welcome Tony. Triode Corp makes excellent amps.

They make very goo sounding amps - err well Line Magnetic actually makes them! So I'm on board. They always get paired with Acoustic Zen speakers at Audio Shows and IME they have always sounded quite. Indeed, at the last show I was at they were a top 4 room for me. And considering the price that is saying something!

Hi folks,

My first post here. I've been shopping around for a tube amp, and have been looking at the Woo Audio WA5 and the WA 234 monoblocks, which have had some good reviews.

Is anyone here familiar with them, especially the WA 234? I'd be using them to drive a pair of high sensitivity horn speakers.

Thanks!

I'm a big fan of BorderPatrol amplifiers. Gary Dews designs and has fabricated the critical components (such as power & output transformers). Also, IMHO, his massive dual mono power supplies really produce some amazing sonics. I lived with his S10 300B EXD amplifier during last October's RMAF and was so enamored with the sound quality, I purchased the amp! I owned & listened to a ton of SET amps, and the BorderPatrol's appear to not have any shortcomings for a SET design...

My $0.02,
Pete
