I’m looking to buy a Chord Hugo TT2. What would be the best place to acquire one and can they be purchased with any sort of discount off the MSRP?

Another question about the Chord Hugo TT2 if I may add to this thread.

It includes an amp section designed for headphones that offers up to 18 watts. This is more than enough for my 107 dB speakers. Can this TT2 be used without an external amp to power Avantgarde Duo speakers? If so, as there are no speaker sockets, how would one connect cables to the speakers?

Another question about the Chord - how does one adjust the volume? I presume there's an IR remote, but I'm hoping there's a control on the TT2 itself - essential for when the phone rings and the RC has disappeared between the sofa cushions!

I hope Mike will be able to offer advice as I gather his dealership handles Chord and Avantgarde. Thanks

There is volume control on the unit itself, it’s the central ball. From what I can see and understand you would either swipe or spin it. There is also a remote but apparently it’s made of plastic and could be better. While you could run ultra efficient speakers with wire adapters from the XLR out, Rob Watts says its not exactly recommended, and you should still considered it preamp.

You cannot drive speakers with the Hugo unless they are completely powered speakers. The unit does have a volume control, I believe bottom front right, you slide your finger across it. A real quirk worth mentioning, of course, may not be an issue if using as a preamp, when using fixed analog output you have to set the output to variable to use the headphone jack, if not, the headphone is full volume.

As a side note, reviews of products can reveal many details not found on the website or description of products.

Around the same price and product, you may want to look at the MyTech Manhattan. I have no reference for sound comparison.

There are people on Head-Fi that do use the Chord Hugo TT 2 as a very limited amplifier with ultra sensitive single driver passive speakers because it does put out more wattage than usual. That said, again, Rob Watts doesn’t really think it is a good idea. Probably because he offers a nice class D amp to go with the TT 2 form factor along with the M-Scaler upgrade.

What do they hook the speakers to? Headphone output?

Ines Adler of Voxativ talks about this in Darko's factory tour video, some of her customers are using the Hugo outputs to directly drive her speakers. Rob Watts and John Franks of Chord also unofficially endorse the practice.

Below is an adapter from RS Components in the UK, but you get the idea, you're connecting the inverting and non-inverting pins from the XLR as +/- for speaker connections

Thanks Mike. Can you recommend the Chord Hugo TT2 to directly drive super-efficient speakers such as Avantgarde Duos? If so, presumably the best connection is by using the short XLR to female banana adaptors as illustrated by puroagave.

Thanks. Peter from UK

I decided to stretch for the Chord Dave or the eventual Dave 2. The Chord Hugo TT2 just does not tick all of my boxes, it’s an odd design really. The Dave has a far more normal design and feature set and it is still the King when considering Chord DAC quality. It’s good to be the King.

Congrats! The Chord Dave is an amazing DAC and has a wonderful transport that goes with it as well.

Enjoy,
