Best High Efficiency Speaker for the Money ?

I kind of agree with Woody, the Pendragons are well reviewed and certainly will play loud with something like the Line Magnetics integrated. Buy the EL-34 based LM of your choice and you may even be under budget.

Mark...if you are looking for a no hassle tube system using a reasonably powerful tube integrated like a 70wpc Prima Luna integrated, then you can drive most real world speakers easily. I would recommend you check out used DeVore Gibbon Super 8s (can be had in the $2-3K range) and mate it with a PL integrated and you are done. Very high-sensitivity and benign impedance speakers like the Tektons, Klipsch, etc...(and the list I provided earlier) are options to consider when you plan on using low-powered SET tube amps. In your case, I don't think you need to even consider those. Not that there is anything wrong with them but I just mention it because a 50-70 wpc tube integrated amp can drive most speakers comfortably, and if you chose something that is relatively an easier load (given an impedance above 4 ohms across the frequency band) like a DeVore you will be fine.

I have much to learn, and I have until next spring before I have to purchase.
I'm not set on any single amp, all I require is a remote control to control the volume.

I'm a firm believer in speakers first !

Klipsh are the ones to look at. K-Horns require corner placement. Volti modifications make these a whole different animal and they can compete with the big boys for sure. I've rarely heard Zu's sound good. Takes a bit to get them there but then again, your room may be too large for them in any case. Tannoy's sound beautiful if you like their vintage presentation but they don't sound like modern day speakers IMO. There's always tuba styled horns, but they are as much about making a visual statement as sound, and are not inexpensive.

And don't forget the amp. A good SET is not cheap - needs better iron than a conventional tube amp and that's where the money goes.

You need to decide what kind of tube sound you like. Read up and give a listen to as many as you can. 300B's sound different than EL34's, or 845's, 6550's, 2A3's, 211's, etc.

Does anyone actually own Tektons? I'm thinking of a little pair of Mini Lore Monitors; and either a Rachel...or something sweet from Finale.
