beginner needs help!

It never is easy... I believe it is always a trade off :)... we just do the best we can for what we can afford to spend :D....

THANK YOU surrounded by sound, randy myers, chalk and A. wayne! i ALWAYS want new ideas and want to learn. i am reading about tubes now. triodes, pentodes, etc.

i have decided to do an integrated TUBE amp. that was a big decision for me, tubes are so alien to me.
facts: my bowers and wilkins CM6 are purchased, used daily. sensitivity 88 db, suggest 30-120 watts. 8 ohms. my room is fixed, 13 by 13 feet, 10 foot ceiling. i will always use that room.
fact: i will buy, soon an oppo $500 good CD player. fact: i will get a good subwoofer. then i will be done. thinking of the REL T zero, from Mike for $500 or the next better one up. i want a high quality musical one, not a disco boom box. i will consider vinyl records, but sounds like a lot of work to do it right.

question: will i be happy long term with the $2400 prima luna, or should i get the $3400 or $4400 integrated amp????? Mike, whom i trust VERY well, thought i should get the $4400 one with i think KT 150 tubes. i am still ignorant about tubes, but i know there are different ones! i may say that yesterday in the store, in a room bigger than mine, the $2400 prima integrated , with my speakers, sounded GREAT GREAT! especially after it warmed up. wow. WITHOUT a sub woofer. a WARM, rich, sound. i find it interesting that they make tube amps for $9500 with 35 watts of power! ha!
would like any an all ideas: should i get a BETTER Prima Luna integrated amp, or stick with the $2400.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! i want ALL ideas. bob

Bob, as Mike would have mentioned the more power you have to play with the better position you will be in if you choose to change your speakers & they are not as efficient as the ones you have at the moment. People that buy impulsively without forethought to where they are going with their system usually buy thrice!

@Old Bob,

How loud do you listen ? Distance from your speakers..? And as important, music genre you mostly listen to ..?

Regards

Thrice ..! Well if you dont take it serious .... :)

hi A. Wayne!

room is only 13 by 13. thus, I sit fairly close to speakers, NOT deafening loud. classical music, as, full orchestras, piano concerto with full orchestra, and SOME eric Clapton,led zeppelin, etc, not super super loud. bob

Bob...I agree with Mike and Kev. I think if you buy the Dialogue Premium HP with the KT 150 tubes you will buy it right and just the one time for the foreseeable future. If you decide to change the speakers down the road, it should be able to handle most speakers you throw at it. Plus the ability to have headroom, especially with the classical music you listen to which often is recorded with the full dynamic envelope intact, means when those crescendos in the music hit, or the sudden transient attack of the violins kick in, there is plenty of headroom for the amp to provide the current in those milliseconds to give you the full measure of that dynamic which is what a lot of classical music is about.

So not trying to spend your money unwisely rather suggesting if you can afford it, I think the PL Dialogue Premium probably gets you done for the next ten years. The caveat being this is an addictive hobby so once you gear up and providing you are happy with it, you should not subscribe to any of the audio magazines (The Absolute Sound, Stereophile, etc...) and you should only visit the music section of audio sites such as this one! :D If you open yourself up to all the glossy pictures in the magazines and start reading headlines about the next "best" piece of gear, you will succumb to upgraditis or audiophilia nervosa and that will not bode well for your savings account :D
