My son (14) and I are beginning to listen to music together which is really nice. He likes classic rock over contemporary any day. His favorite band thus far: The Beatles.

I'd like to get some Beatles on vinyl for us to listen to. What versions do you guys recommend? There are so many out there!:disbelief:

I recently picked up a stereo version of 'Meet the Beatles' used. Really just wanted it for the album cover before they changed it to 'With the Beatles'. The store had the mono version of 'Meet the Beatles' but it had a hairline scratch.:(

Suggestions/recommendations appreciated!

Cheers!

Mike, do you have the whole set or just the 2 titles you mentioned because those were particularly good?

I have just the new Abbey Road and Original UK pressing of Rubber Soul and Revolver.

You could go several ways Mike
1) Get your self a good copy of the Beatles Red (1962-1966) and Blue album sets (1967-1970), These are compilation albums released in 1973 and then rereleased in 1993
Hard to find in pristine condition

2) Purists will hate this but I bought it and LOVE IT LOVE IT
Amazon.com: The Beatles Stereo Vinyl Box Set: Music

14 Re-mastered original albums in a cool box and an awesome coffee table book. All on 180gr vinyl.
If you look at the cost, its about 22 per album and that doesn't even coin the huge hardcover picture book

Purists hate it because they are remastered...but know what ? Unless you are doing side by sides, they are awesome and NEW. Also, some of the older ones were not exactly that nice sounding. I love the soundstage and separation on these.

You can tell I am biased (even though I have about 10 of the older ones, I never listen to them)

And the box set gets a place of honor in the room...LOL

I am also enjoying the box set of LPs that came out late last year. There have been mixed reviews but I think they sound great, not scratched like my elementary school version of abbey road (my 10th birthday present!). What great music to enjoy with your son!

Thanks, guys. Probably will get the box set. I saw the prices for some UK pressings and I was like :disbelief::disbelief:

You will love it ...when you get them , check EVERY one...if you have any that are warped CONTACT amazon...they will express you a new set and pay to ship the others back.

I was a pre-order customer. The first box sets ALL came warped...people were screaming...Amazon took care of it, got better pressings and they EXPRESS shipped my next set (overnight..wow..considering the weight) and arranged the prepaid return.

I have not heard of further problems, mine are dead straight and awesome...

I've always liked "Let It Be." If you can get past the fodder of ramblings and junk between the songs it is quite something. I couldn't tell you what it's like on vinyl though...not yet anyway!

Hmm, good to know. I was going to order from Acoustic Sounds as they are a little bit cheaper, and with 10% off for Fathers Day, makes it a lot cheaper. But Amazon service does sound beneficial in this case.

Thx, Rob!

Allen did you order the set or any of the single records yet? I've been listening to the Beatles this morning and agree with Mike. I think a must have album is Rubber Soul. Great writing and for me this was the perfect time for the Beatles. Right between their early stuff (which had many hits for them, but they were still searching for their "sound") and the hippy psychedelia (I never really liked Sgt. Pepper). I think they were firing on all cylinders during this time period.

I ordered the whole set with the Fathers Day discount code. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get them to fit on my FP table. :) Oh well, counting the hours until Thursday when the little brown man arrives with a big box containing my dream table. I know its not an AMG, but its what I've always wanted since I got back into vinyl many moons ago with my little Rega table.

Looking forward to it. I like "From Me To You". Fun little toe tapping song. Can't wait to dive into Rubber Soul and Revolver.

Mike, I don't think the cart on the FR would do those records justice anyway. It sure is nice when something you've dreamed about for so long finally comes to fruition. That VPI is a beautiful table. It with the new Lyra cart and your system...well it should be a very awesome weekend for you! And that's only the beginning. :woot:

I haven't yet, Doug. I'm thinking let me buy one or two albums first to see how he likes spinning and listening to vinyl. I may take out my old ADS TT and just hook it up to the HT receiver for now.

Rubber Soul is a great album - love Norwegian Wood! But not sure if my son's favorite tracks so probably will get something a different album.

I did buy a used Hey Jude album from Princeton Record Exchange. Not in the greatest condition, but may be ok for the ADS TT for now.

Allen, when my son was first interested in the Beatles my wife and I bought him the album "1" for Christmas one year. He really liked it. Maybe that's an option.

Thx, Doug. Believe we have that. It's a great CD!

We're listening to the White Album right now (on CD).:audiophile:
