BDP-1USB Digital Player

The thumbdrive can only be connected to the A-port which the player has.

James,
After reading the manual from your website, this component allows connection with :-
1. thumbdrive, HDD or SSD via the usb-A port
2. computer via the usb-B port
3. a router via the ethernet port for NAS access.
To rephrase my question, of these 3 options, which would give the best SQ?

Hi,
I just bought the bda 2 one week ago and i am delighted. I am considering buying the bdp 1 usb and was wondering if it is possible to stick via usb adaptator an SD card instead of a NAS or hard drive ?
also where can i see the software interface when controled via android tablet ?
Thanks
David

I glad I learned of this new product offering now. So, I'd like to clear up a point about the USB sans sound card. I have a Metrum Hex with the Amanero Technologies USB card. Up until now, Antipodes DS or DV or perhaps the new Aurender N100 were my final candidates. The BDP-1USB is a compelling wrench in my decision.

Your position is:

SOUND QUALITY When used with a USB DAC the expensive custom audiophile sound card found in our BDP-2 serves no purpose. The BDP-1USB eliminates this cost and saves you money with no sound quality penalty.

Are you implying that, if I chose the Antipodes with its SOTM sound card, it would be a waste of money? At least the fact that it has the SOTM sound card?

Finally, and a tough question I know. My current setup is:

QNAP HS251 NAS (with LPS) >> SOTM SMS100 (with LPS) >> JRiver MC19 >> Metrum Hex with Amanero USB could I evpect an improvement or should I put the $$ into something else?

I like your price and I'd rather keep the $$ in the North American labor market, buy I'd pay the Kiwis or S Koreans if they have something worthwhile.

thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard

The best way to think of it is if you use an ASYNC USB DAC (like our BDA2) the quality of signal is determined by the DAC as the soundcard is bypassed. If you use AES/USB or COAX or BNC out from your source component (like our BDP2) then the quality is determined by the Soundcard.

Hello James,

Thank you for the very prompt reply and sorry, I realized that it may of sounded like I was making a plug for your primary competition. I actually have a chance to understand something that has perplexed me for some time. When you say "bypassed" do you mean really bypassed or <not improved>? And do you think you are competitive with these other options given that you are pricing much lower?

Thank you much,

Richard

Hi Richard

Totally BYPASSED - soundcard is not in the circuit when using USB out from your source component - assuming an ASYNC DAC.

Hi James,

I am very keen on the BDP 1USB and would like to ask whether it is compatible with the Esoteric K-01 which has an asynch USB input(up to 192/24 pcm) but which I have not yet upgraded to handle dsd.
If this product significantly improves the sound quality of hi-res pcm over the spdif input(using a usb-spdif converter from my computer), then I am all in.
Would the BDP-1USB require a driver download on top of the Esoteric's own USB driver or is it just plug-and-play?

Thanks in advance.
Jon.

HI Jon

Yes you should be fine with the PCM over USB without more drivers as long as the Esoteric is a Class 2 USB device which I believe it is.

Originally when I was looking to purchase my BDP the BDP-1USB had only just come out, so it was either with or without the juli@ card, I went with the latter -i.e. the original BDP-1 - believing it better to have both options, when I got my BDP I simply hooked it into my BDA-2 via AES/EBU and never touched it and it sounds great.

However with all this talk of the new audio device in the BDP-2, I decided I might try USB out to my BDA-2 and I can say that the USB and AES/EBU sound practically identical to me, I haven't done any real in depth listening across a broad range of music but they both sound great to me, I wouldn't be able to tell you which input was currently being used if I was blindfolded.

As mentioned before the BDP is nothing like a computer, I have tried multiple computers with multiple dacs via USB and optical and nothing comes close to the BDP. I've used the BDA-2 via USB and Optical to a Mac Pro and Macbook Pro and neither sound anything like the BDP even with the exact same audio files.

So I can't specifically quote the BDP-2 as I have the BDP-1, but I would be more than happy if I had USB out only, but this probably has to do with the DAC, as I've heard other dacs that can't come close to the BDA-2.
