Folks,

I am seriously considering swapping out my pair of Marten Coltrane IIs for a pair of Avantgarde Duo Primos. I have always enjoyed the sound of horn speakers and moving house seems a good excuse to change. I have enjoyed the Martens for over three years now. Any thoughts on this particular brand and /or model. It should mesh nicely with my Audio Note UK Ongaku and M8 preamp.

Howie,

I bet these are amazing. Would love your opinion when you get them. They look awesome!

I have experience with the Duo Mezzo's, very nice speakers... never heard the Primos either. I suggest you read the Roy Gregory reviews on Avantgardes. His experience mirrors my own, the best perfromance I've heard from them has been with moderate powered solid state electronics. I won't speculate on the reasons, nor have I heard them with Audio Note. I've heard them with many many other tube amps. None of the tube amps sounded as good as the Avantgarde's own amps or even better something like the Pass .8 series. Good Luck

Yes, my pal has a Duo and drove them for years with Audio Tekne 8wpc amp. He tried the Job 225 and they exploded to life. He still cant explain it!

Those horns seem to love a "fast" SS amp.

I'd LOVE to hear these properly setup. Avantgarde gets the horn out of horn sound better than others.

It's called dynamics. I've had 550w monos on 118db/w horns and while it was quite dynamic, I scaled back to a pair of 22w triode based tube monos for a more holographic presentation.

Nah, its more than that, according to him. For the first time, the bass modules are keeping up with the horns and other good things. I have emails from him and his good buddy detailing the difference. I heard his system 2 years ago, but only with the A -Teknes and he tells me the difference is night and day…and he prizes holographics and emotional impact over dynamics.

I don't like horns! Well, it might be a reaction to my (mandatory) military service when a bunch of morons kept shouting at me... Anyway, I cannot stand any more shouting so horns are out of my sight!

I have heard them with SS electronics but the best I have had the pleasure of hearing them so far was a Kondo Ongaku with M1000 preamp. Truly stunning. Hopefully my Audio Note will do justice to it!

As I wrote half a year ago the Munich show was in my experience the renaissance of the horn. A lot of exciting demoes with incredible sound. Avantgarde is one of the premium horn manufacturers.
In Munich they impressed already with the semi-horn system Zero-one that of course demonstrated excellent dynamics but combined with fine imaging. I was impressed..

I didnt get to hear them TWICE, but feedback has been unanimously great!

Just like domes and cones, there are good, bad, and sometimes terrible examples of each.

I own Zeros, they were the perfect solution for a second system for me, couldn't be happier with them.
Ha, I can imagine! Your second system is a dream for many!

Of course they don't come close to the GU's with sub... That would be my dream. That is: if I would have rooms big enough.

Howie, just do it:hey:

I've heard the early Duo set up by Jim Smith and was very impressed. the primo with twice the woofer area and horn loading probably cures the slight bass imbalance I heard in the duo. Id love to hear them myself.

I did it. Thanks for the encouragement. I got the horns in Matte Grey as they are a little more subdued than shiny ones.

Wish me luck!
