Are you a snob?

"I don't often drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. Stay thirsty my friends" - The most Interesting Man in the world.

I'm not a drinker actually, (tried it, didn't like it), but I couldn't resist that with all the beer talk going on.
(I like those ads anyway, I think they are funny).

I saw this question asked on another forum and thought it would be an enjoyable topic here.

Which other forum if I may ask Bob?

- Are you a music snob?

No.

- Are you an audio equipment snob?

No.

- Are you a wine, watch, beer, car, boat, bike, etc. snob?

No.

Before you answer this topic I have to pose the question "What's the difference between a "snob" and someone who just buys and enjoys a quality product (by whatever definition of quality works for you)?"

It's all in one's overall attitude towards others and how high that person is on the level of his own deep belief. ...Disbelief?
...Big difference on how you treat yourself and others. ...Seriously.

* James Bond, did he truly have a big ego? ;)

I think the main thing that separates a snob from a real connoiseur is the fact that the snob just feigns to like top-level things of life because these are fashionable, expensive or both.

I love peaty, salty whiskey, so when someone posing as a whisky lover came at my house I just got out a bottle of Quarter-Cask Laphroaig (cask strength). The guy took a sip, put his glass down then (nicely) asked for ice cubes. That lit my bulb - he was not a whisky afficionado but just a snob!

I think I prefer the "Geek" term as well.

Audio Geek: You don't hang out here if you're not
BBQ Geek: I own 3 charcoal, 3 gas and 2 smokers
RV Geek: 40' diesel pusher
Dirt bike Geek: KTM
Bourbon Geek: Neet please
Lawn Geek: Still just learning
Retired boat Geek: how many guys can say they have owned a Douglas Skater? 110 mph!

I think I'll have a glass of wine now. As a matter of fact I am pouring myself a glass of Cono Sur Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere (Chile).

Anyone cares to join me? :)

It's too late on a week night for me.

I have to make someone bleed in the morning!

:D

* I don't like it much. But I can drink it because it was given to me on a special occasion. ...Besides Chile won, and it won't kill me, ...won't make me bleed blood in the morning under Gary's scalpel. ;)

Ohh yeah - food snobs too! Forgot about them. :snicker:

I guess, by all accounts, I'm not a snob about much of anything. I like good things and am at the point in my life where I don't have to skimp on everything. I can enjoy something good once in a while, and if friends are with me I can share the experience and some common knowledge on the subject. I don't profess to be "king of the hill" but I do have a lifetime of experince, as do all of you, and am willing to listen as much as I talk.

I like good food and am blessed with a wife who is a great cook, and loves food too. We eat at restaurants that serve what she cannot make at home, and enjoy the experience.

I like good wine and belong to a local wine club. The club meets every 3 months or so for dinner and vintage wine. Great guys and lots of fun times. But at home I'm usually drinking under $20 bottles.

I like nice watches and own a few. I appreciate mechanical movements, but I also appreciate value, so I don;t own any "ma'valous" pieces that could fund a semester in college.

I enjoy good beer. I do have that 18 pack of Bud light cans in the basement too, for bringing to the golf course.

We all are audio geeks here, so no elaboration necessary. We all enjoy music or we wouldn't be audio-geeks. I love showing off my system to anyone who wants to take the time to listen, because it is a passion.

I love golf and am passibly good at it. I'm looking forward to playing more in retuirement and getting better, but I flub my share of shots just like anyone else (maybe I'm a tad better at recovering from those though).

I hate discussing politics, but I love discussing the economy and investments. Probably because it was my college major and I've spent the last 35 years in the industry. It's what I do, to some extent.

I love reading a good book, on paper, with a cover. Not on an electronic device. Call me old fashioned.

I love travel and hope to begin doing more of it when the kids are both in college and we have more leisure time to just pick up and go. Semi-retirement is looming large. This means basically catching up on our worldly education (before we can't physically do so anymore) rather than focusing entirely on the family.

So, all in all, I'm probably just like the rest of you. With likes, dislikes, opinions, emotions, friendships, education on limited topics, experiences, loves and losses. I can certainly be an asshole at times, but I can also be compassionate and helpful at others. I'm sure someone somewhere has thought of me as a snob about something or other. But it's not what I strive to be. Mostly I just want to be happy.

"The pursuit of happiness..."

Many times I've told my sweet wife if we were to lose everything, it really wouldn't matter, because we know how to be happy. It is a blessing I am eternally grateful for, one earned through many struggles, and what I value most in this world (next to the love of my wife.)

"Love, work, and knowledge are the wellsprings of our life. They should also govern it."
-- Wilhelm Reich

Happiness is a State of Mind, not State of Bank Account. Well said Bob!

Well put Brian!
That speaks directly to what I said earlier about not putting down others for their gear or music and letting them enjoy what they have and like.

I guess to sum it up ...

It isn't about everyone agreeing or playing with the same "stuff"...it's respecting that people like different things, for different reasons. Being able to appreciate the differences, and learn from them, helps to enrich my life. And that makes me happy.
