Are there computer experts in the Shark house (aquarium)?

Here's my situation:

Local area connection; "a network cable is unplugged".

Checking at the rear of my PC I can see where the cable to my modem is connected that the two small lights (orange and green) are going off every minute or so, with the orange one flashing almost constantly.

Then caput, no more Internet for me.

* What I did:
- Change the cable to a brand new one. ...Result: Doesn't work!
- Change the modem to a brand new one. ...Result: Doesn't work!
- Open my PC and clean it. ...Result: Doesn't work!
- Clean the modem cable jack. ...Result: Doesn't work!

What else can I do? ...Thank you.
 
Power rest your modem, then restart the computer. It is possible the network card that the cable is plugged into has gone bad. On older computers, it does happen. If you have another slot in your machine, you can install another network card and see if the connection comes up.


Keep in mind when changing modems, cable modems, everything is shut down and restarted from the modem, router then computer. Each device has a unique ip/mac address and has to be authenticated on the network. You can not just swap them and expect them to work. All power off, power on the modem, then the router then the computer.

1. I did several restarts Joe, but nothing works. ...Modem and PC, both.

2. I think you might be into something here: The Netword Card. ...I think that it is the culprit.
BUT! Here's the dilemma here: My PC is an IBM ThinkCentre, and that Network card in the rear has also all the other connections as well.
-> It is NOT a separate card! The entire thing would have to be replaced, or a new PC. I'm just no expert, but I do love my small tabletop ThinkCentre.

3. Tomorrow I'll have to call my local computer technician, and see if I can clean the underneath of the main board.
OR! If they have a spare (full) card for my particular IBM PC (not many more of those around).

The other end of the cable could also be the source of the problem. It does not necessarily mean the computer side is the problem.
 
What type of computer is it?

If a mac, I've found various components (bluetooth, etc) will stop working for whatever reason, and you do a specific type of shutdown and startup sequence it will clear a certain memory that clears the problem up.

* My problem was this:

About a week ago I upgraded my 'security' provider to its highest level. ...It detected a new Network in my PC (a change). But I didn't know that it could have been the reason of my issue (disconnection).

This afternoon I talked to a technical PC guy from the Philippines, Ian. And for two hours we worked together (I let him in) in trying to solve my major problem. We checked EVERYTHING together. We even did two "Restores", but they both failed!
Then Ian proposed me the Premium service (you have to pay; about $80 if they can fix your issue, and if not you don't), and he asked me to wait till he gets the new higher 'premium' tech guy. ...About five minutes because he also had to explain to this guy all the ins and outs. I said ok, I'll wait. ...Then while waiting I took a gamble, and I did a third try on 'restore', with a third date (by only one day).
Then Ian came back to the phone to tell me, that because I constantly lose my connection the expert guy wouldn't be able to help me out.
...Last option was to bring my PC to a local PC expert. ...Tomorrow.

BUT! The third 'restore' did work this time! And lo & behold, euraka! ...Then we shot everything off and then everything back on.
Then we unplugged the modem/router's AC power cord, then we plugged it back on, then we checked the Network (Internet Explorer, and Google Shine), but waited few seconds for the system to kick in with its new reborn data, and now the connection establishment was solidly 'core'. ...The new 'security' program was killed, and my own older security system was back in service.

After an extensive two hours of trying everything, and with three restore's tentatives, finally patience and team work paid off! The third restore worked, and I was back online.

Conclusion: Think, and think right, then your on the right track. ...Work real hard, be patient, always keep your cool, be smart, live on the edge, always, and you'll be able to be in control of your own destiny.

True story, today!
 
Hi Bob, wish I had seen this earlier. I could have just told you the problem was with the new security program. Could have saved you some time. There's certainly nothing wrong with getting a new security program (anti-virus, malware, privacy, etc) as long as it's a good one. Still, you have to know what your getting into when you install those. I've had anti-virus programs try to kill legitimate programs thinking they were viruses. I've even had a Windows update kill my internet connection once and another time a Windows update killed the Update program itself and I had to do a full restore! Yes, even the official windows updates are not that pure. Your philosophy is correct though, when installing new security programs, take it slow and easy, read all about it before installing and pay attention. ~Eric

We learn from stuff like that. ...And I'm the type of person that ain't afraid of exploring new 'worlds' from real life, and from the cyber space as well.
I did a trial with that new top-of-the-line 'security' system (anti-virus and all that anti-spam/advertising crap jazz). ...It did cut on advertising.

BUT! It also killed my network! And I'm just not an expert enough to know why exactly.
And after a third 'system restore' try, in the goal of removing it, I finally succeeded.
...There was no option to remove it from the program itself; we checked!

I'd rather live with crap advertisements than lose my network, duh.

I am convinced that there must be a way around it (so that it doesn't disconnect me from the 'sound waves'; Internet), but I simply don't know how (because I did not try). ...I simply got rid of it, finally!

Computers are not my expertise at all, but I did learn few things over the years.
And what I learned I do remember (or try to).

* My very first computer ever; I totally destroyed it within two weeks! No kidding either; I unleashed the 'blue screen of death' in trying to upgrade the entire operating system program (from Windows 98 to Windows 2000).
I never bothered to get it fixed; I simply bought another computer.

Like I said, I ain't afraid of nothing and no one. ...Life is a big learning process here on planet Earth, and is very short too; so there is no time to be afraid or to explore other venues right away. ...No time to get stuck in the past either.
-> Just look at five years ago about everything electronics (HDTVs, cameras, PCs & Macs, Streaming, etc., etc., etc.), and look now at today!
