Apple Music Streaming Service

Well, my guess is they will stream damaged songs. They still don't sell lossless files at iTunes, so it appears they just want money, and could care less about quality.

I'll be boycotting that for sure. IMO, Apple has chosen not to take its vision to the next level because it has an attitude that it's hardware is the be all and end all of a closed eco-system that is losing its momentum. That arrogance costed them in the 80s. It will cost them again. Only this time, the evangelist will not return.

Steve - I'm a big Apple fan, but I admit, the hunter has become the hunted.

Visionaries like Jobs that change the world don't come along very often. When I reflect upon those periods, they were pivotal moments. Apple ][, Lisa (MacIntosh), iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad. The world is stumbling along looking for the next iWonder. Lossy streaming is not it.

With Sony behind it, one would hope it will be redbook and better.

I'm not even going to bother looking at it. From the way I use streaming music service I don't have a dog in this fight, but I have a strong feeling it won't be any better than iTunes. I certainly would not hold my breath for anything better than 320kps from this if they even do that. They aren't even looking at MQA and Tidal is already on board with that from what I have been told. In addition, sound quality is half the battle, library is the other half.
Stories I hear about Apple customer service on products such as ithings are stellar, but I'm sure this music service will not be one of them. They are already hurting from acquiring the Beats headphones (no surprise there).
Just my opinion.

I hate to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway. I would rather go to the dentist and get a root canal than listen to PCM streaming over a stereo system. I listen to lossy, compressed PCM everyday when I listen to satellite radio in my vehicle. It's a sorry imitation of what music really sounds like. The classic jazz channel sounds the best, but that's not saying much. i'm still waiting to see if Meridian with their MQA can deliver 50% of what they are promising. When are their downloads going to be available?

Mark, I understand where you're coming from. Before I packed everything up, I was streaming Tidal at home. The sound quality can't compare to the Lumin streaming music from my NAS. It's not bad, but still not as good. The BEST thing, for me, about Tidal or any streaming service is the chance to hear whole CD's and then decide if I want to purchase the music. I might even end up buying it on Vinyl. But without this kind of service I would not get the chance to hear so much new and different music.

Mark, we think alike on that one. That is the main aspect of my use of a streaming service followed closely by research of new music and the related. That's why I can get away with just using a Spotify subscription. I only require a taste and don't need the best sound quality. Now if I were using streaming as a serious listening source, I'd be more concerned about sound quality and would have something other than a Spotify subscription.

This is turning out to be one giant fart noise.

Too loosely quote NPR.

"7ish million people pay to stream in the US. Apple has 800 million credit cards on file"

Can Apple cause the shift to pay for streaming music?

Just read a quick review of the streaming service. It said that it opens up the iTune store for streaming. No mention of using undamaged files.

16bit/44.1khz minimum or forget about it.

Dan, (as you know) the CD audio bit rate is 1,411.2 kbit/s (as 2 channels × 44,100 samples per second per channel × 16 bits per sample = 1,411,200 bit/s = 1,411.2 kbit/s).

Is that what you are looking for?

The business model appears to be solid but only time will tell. No mention of high quality sound or CD quality sound.

Yes. If Apple will provide CD quality streaming on par with Tidal and Deezer, I believe they will have a viable alternative in the streaming market.

While Apple does boast that its radio service will only play “music that is great,” the company has not announced the bitrates available for streaming Apple Music. iTunes purchases are 256 kbps AAC files, so its possible that Apple Music will stream at a similar rate.

Their music devices only support up to 320Kbps, so that would confirm their deliberate omission.

Why does the black Apple hide the truth?

Steve... "their music devices only support 320kps", pardon?

Kev...You could have corrected me.... Here's what it is:

Audio formats supported: AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), HE-AAC, MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV

When it comes to bit rates, I am mostly uninformed with the exception of what I am reading in the forums. So forgive the question here if I am way off.

Is it possible, as an example, in the High-Fi community there is a large pool of folks content with the Sony/Panasonic offerings and then there's the much smaller community that desires the McIntosh/Burmester offerings - so in this case, there's Apple and there will be folks that flock to a better bit rate offering, say TIDAL.?

Just a guess, the majority will not ever think about bit rates so the Apple model may have that large pool appeal?
