I'm still kind of old school and living in the past I suppose as I am still messing with cd's. I like reading the liner notes and handling the cd itself and popping it into the player. I just bought a dozen or so cd's on Ebay and wound up with a new 2018 remaster of Pink Floyd "Animals." Usually with remasters and such I usually hear very little ( if at all ) improvement over the original version. I am completely mind blown over the sound quality of this remaster. I have listened to this album hundreds of times and have never heard this album approach this quality, even on vinyl. I set the ADT alarm off 3 times I had it cranked up so much. BTW, I have many pressings of DSOTM and even the Japan pressing does not come close to this gem.
 
Animals is not a new remaster, it's a new remix. that is why it sounds so different.
 
I see by reading the packaging that it is a remix not a remaster as I thought. Either way it's really bad@$$. Thanks for pointing that out, I will have to look for other remixes.
 
I heard that 2018 version on Tidal when it came out and I didn't like it. Maybe it's Tidal who knows. My CD rip from an older version was better. It was redone in 2018 but for some reason was just released a couple weeks ago.
 
I should add others have reported liking the new version. I'll have to go back for another listen to see if same result.

I am also very observant to any changes in music I have heard before. I hear the differences on radio stations who use mp3..
 
+1 on the 2018 remix. I noticed a huge difference right away on the desktop (Qobuz App), and that gulf only widened on the home system through the LUMIN (LUMIN App playing Qobuz).

Just to be sure my ears and memory weren't playing tricks on me, I went back and forth with the original release several times and there was no comparison.

Thank you LUMIN and Qobuz for making this truly exceptional experience possible!
 
I went back and listened again, if you enjoy the new mix that's great. What you are hearing on the 2018 mix is added compression that added weight to the drums and brings the sound forward. With that, and the remix making the songs out of balance from the original ruins it for me. I'm too used to the original mix. The compression also reduces the air around the instruments. What I mean by out of balance, you can tell some of the synth was punched up some along with other sound effects in places. It is the same music but doesn't sound like the same album.

I did see there is Blu-ray and a 5.1 mix of the 2018 mix album.
 
Interesting. I'll have to do the back-to-back-to-back again and see if I can hear what you are talking about.

To me personally, the 1977 version is more "compressed sounding" in general. With that said, there have certainly been instances of remixed and/or remastered releases that I didn't think sounded better than the originals. Animals is not one of those.
 
Animals is one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums and my top album for driving alone in the middle of the night.

I hear the opposite.

James Guthrie doesn't seem like the kind of producer to "add compression" when tasked with this project. Have you read otherwise? Because my ears tell me the opposite.


Overall, I find the 2018 remix of course "different" and I also find it "better" in SOME ways. I suspect that most of my preference is that I heard the 1977 version for 45 years.
 
Listening to the cd and listening to a file might be completely different? Without question, the remix on cd is 10x better than the original.
 
I was talking in a group of "audiophiles" and happened to ask about this 2018 album,one guy who has it on LP says it is great. One guy who knew a bit about the making mentioned it was a remix and is different from the original, hence, the new cover. When I go back and forth I do prefer my CD rip for SQ still vs streaming the new 2018 though the original has a bit thinner sound where the 2018 sounds more full. I really think the real issue for me is the remix. I really do have an unusually good memory in regards to how something I've heard before sounds, especially a number of times. So at this point the 2018 sounds foreign to me. The 2nd guy suggested I try to listen to the 2018 with a fresh perspective, sort of put the original out of mind. I haven't been able to do that yet.

I'd also like to compare the two versions with just streaming to see if the difference in just sound narrows.

Just FYI I use Dogs for my comparisons. I don't know if the issue with the two versions standing out so much to me is a curse or a good thing, LOL

Totally understood; I think that we all vary in our reactions in that regard. My wife is very much aligned with your experience, with having a bit of a 'hard time' adapting to what seems as changes to music she's heard for 30, 40, etc. years. Her worst experience was the first time we listened to the Beatles' "Love" soundtrack. She (almost) ran out of the room screaming! :). Of course that is NOT even close to subtle.

I would like to think that I have a pretty good memory of how the original sounded on vinyl, but the budget in my teens was limited and I was able to find other creative ways of enhancing the listening experience other than better recordings and equipment, if you know what I mean... so there's no way that I can compare the differences - the 1977 on vinyl could very well have sounded better than the streamed 2018 remix streamed on Qobuz.

I could see people having a hard time accepting the new sound of the remix. Pink Floyd is one of those bands that within a few notes takes me back to the time when I first heard it, and I understand not wanting to alter that experience. (Hmm, I wonder how altered it (or I) would need to be to re-create the 1977 experience. Do modern pharmaceuticals offer any hope??)
 
If the potency of Pot today compared to 1977 is any indicator, probably a safe bet.

I post there when I find albums that I really think others might like or worthy of mention, however, I typically do not read others posts there. The issue is many, like yourself, just post pictures for the most part. I don't see so use a screen reading software. This is great for text but not to the point that it reads images. I really don't want to waste my time scrolling through those posts to see by chance if someone actually typed anything.

Interesting, was not aware of that. I sometimes try to put a tidbit there to peak someone’s interest but yes, generally I’ve always just seen it as a way to share “maybe check this one out”, but visually. I’ll try to remember to comment something useful to cover that angle; thanks for mentioning it.
 
Does anyone know of any other remixes of classic albums out there? I have some remasters but the best one falls pretty short of the Animals remix. Thanks in advance.
