Hmmmm.....I've seen speakers like these before. :) I bet they don't sound like the XLF's. I'm sure Mr. Wilson has invested an incredible amount of R&D dollars which would make it tough to duplicate!
 
I hear you Mike. His speakers look great and I'm sure a lot of time was put into them. I'm not sure how I feel about him totally ripping off Wilson Audio though.

NOt sure how I feel...Maybe they sound awesome, maybe they are a ripoff...but they are (to me) ugly as sin...Belong in an arcade ..or

I feel the same way too about ripping off Mr Wilson's design. Hoping he didn't build that speakers purpose of selling it. But I have to admit his craftsmanship though.

It appears he voiced them to his own liking instead of copying Wilson. I'm glad he used Focal's Beryllium tweeter too.
 
I've been to the Wilson factory, and the materials and glues and internal bracing and crossovers are all part of the magic. This guy has none of those things in his replicas.

I'm sure they sound good, but not like the real thing. I'm impressed anyone would go through this trouble, but it doesn't take away from the work Wilson is doing.

I looked at his room, colors and gear. All I can say is that a pair of (real) Futura's or Alexia's in that dark coco brown would look a lot nicer. Just saying.

But on the other hand, I admire his drive and ability to "DIY". I wonder though....if he can build speakers like these, why he couldn't come up with a different/original cabinet shape too?

Perhaps he loved the shape/look of the XLF so much....

For sure Bob, but why didn't this guy come up with his own design? Even all of the Impressionist painters had their own style. When someone else paints Monet's lily pads it's called a copy...

You're absolutely right Allen. I'm sure there's a lot of what some people like to call "black magic" involved in building a Wilson Audio speaker that most of us don't know about. I'd like to believe that's true in many cases in the audio industry. I admire the fact that these companies have their manufacturing secrets.

BTW, the turntable in the picture was also a DIY project!

No need to feel like offended virgin with people like that when people have no shame sharing hard drive full of music without paying royalty to artist.
 
I personally see absolutely no reason why someone with the skills shouldn't be able to try and duplicate damn near anything they want to, for their own use and enjoyment. Hell, there are tons of schematics on the net, and plenty of pictures of the insides of components where a competant DIY'er can make decent guesses as to how they should be laid out and constructed. Whetyher it is a speaker, amp, DAC, turntable, cable, whatever. Of course it won't be the real thing ... but that's not the point. It's the thrill of testing your own technical prowess and reaping the benefits and enjoyment from your efforts.

Remember, this is the highest form of flattery.

Of course making it with the intent to sell it for profit, or making a business out of it is a no-no. But eventually this guy will get the bug to replicate something else, so these will likely be sold to someone. Hopefully it will be a private sale and not posted on Audiogon.
 
So then if someone builds a pair of DIY coffin box speakers with a few drivers and a port, who are they ripping off?
Are they only ripping someone off if it's a whacked out looking design?

Just sayin....carry on.

I saw these a long while back on another site and thought it was cool that someone has the time and skill to build something similar.
