Always Wondered About Cartridge Evolution In A Manufacturers Line

I have always wondered if a designer changes his concepts, theories, and style very often. For instance, I wonder what the differences are between long standing cartridge manufacturers products such as Dr Tonomori's Karat line from the 23R to the 17D3. yes I know the cantilever material is different, but is there really conceptual differences and wholesale changes as the years go by? What about Nakatsuka-San designs from Accuphase to Monster to ZYX? Or the longstanding designs from Benz Micro and Ortofon? I personally wonder what all the differences were between the Clearaudio Signature I got on my secondary table and the following iterations.

it is rare to ever find any information out there about cartridge manufacturing and sub assemblies, and what a designer does? It is hard to follow the story of how a new designer comes through the ranks, and what happens to the previous generations great ones. Shoot its hard to even grasp how a designer works his craft...and there appears to be so little information out there. For instance, its almost impossible to find detailed information on Phase Tech and how the company came into being, yet it appears to be highly regarded by the domestic Japanese hobbyist.

Anyone got any insights?

Well being a professional artist gives me a little insight to the minds of designers/artist/musicians etc and I can say that the plight of the artist is to never be satisfied. Like a shark you must always move forward, always push yourself and your ideas. Any good designer is always thinking of his next move, the next tweak to a design. Now he will naturally have his own style so you will see a uniformity to his ideas but each will be both unique and similar to his previous body of work.

well piggy, i remember when the 23r and 17d (i would have, and still do, prefer the 23r for some reason) were the top of the line and i think they came out at the same time or thereabouts. just different materials, same construction. i truly love the short cantilever a la the adc XLM.

i know the 10xd evolved within itself, a friend had one and it was unbearingly bright but the newer ones are said to be just great.

more evolution can be seen at the ortofon genesis of design. i wish they would issue a paper on that subject. they do have a seductive sound (i would take a Kb in a flash).
