I have always wondered if a designer changes his concepts, theories, and style very often. For instance, I wonder what the differences are between long standing cartridge manufacturers products such as Dr Tonomori's Karat line from the 23R to the 17D3. yes I know the cantilever material is different, but is there really conceptual differences and wholesale changes as the years go by? What about Nakatsuka-San designs from Accuphase to Monster to ZYX? Or the longstanding designs from Benz Micro and Ortofon? I personally wonder what all the differences were between the Clearaudio Signature I got on my secondary table and the following iterations.
it is rare to ever find any information out there about cartridge manufacturing and sub assemblies, and what a designer does? It is hard to follow the story of how a new designer comes through the ranks, and what happens to the previous generations great ones. Shoot its hard to even grasp how a designer works his craft...and there appears to be so little information out there. For instance, its almost impossible to find detailed information on Phase Tech and how the company came into being, yet it appears to be highly regarded by the domestic Japanese hobbyist.
Anyone got any insights?
