Due to my loud music playing in the family room, my family subtly suggested I really might enjoy listening to music more in the basement. We have a finished basement, but there was no real good listening area, let alone room. So talked to my wife and got the ok to tear down our TV area and build a pretty dedicated listening room.:inlove:

Before we get to the pics, I just wanted to give a big heartfelt thanks to Jeff from A/V Solutions. I just mentioned that I was going to be build a listening room, and the next thing I know we're on the phone for hours with Jeff recommending construction materials and techniques for proper acoustic control and isolation. I think I followed all of his suggestions here and I'll point them out as I go through the pics. Jeff, I couldn't have done it without you, buddy! Your advice and friendship is invaluable!

This project started a few weeks ago. But instead of showing pics in 'real time', decided to compress the time and show you in a few stages. The room when completed will be approximately 17x24x8.5-7.5. There is a dropped ceiling due to duct and pipe work.:(

First, this is what it looked like before construction started:

Tear down the walls, open up the space, and construction begins:

To be cont'd...

Allen,

YOU are a lucky man. That's a pretty big space to fill with sound. Awesome!

Per Jeff's suggestion, I used 2x6 instead of 2x4 studs to put R-19 insulation for better sound isolation.

and the walls go up...

Note the R-19 insulation in the middle of room...

Insulation is in. Time to close up the walls.

But first, another tip from Jeff. He suggested I use two layers of sheetrock on the inside wall, one 5/8" and another 3/8", and use something called Green Glue between them. It's glue-like, but doesn't totally harden, allowing the two layers of sheetrock to vibrate independently from one another to help control resonances (Jeff, did I get that right?).

That's it for now! I'll post more after spackling, painting, carpet, trim, etc. are installed, and then again when I put in the acoustic treatments.

Thx for letting me share!

Thx, Joe! It's not a perfect space, but one I can fill with music to my heart's content! I'm good with that! I do hope you can make it over one day for an evening of music and wine!:audiophile:

Looking great Allen.....you'll be playing the new LP in no time :)

I'm very jealous of you right now Allen!!

I'm hoping to move soon so I can get a dedicated room for myself.. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Allen that is very exciting, nice to be able to do it right! I'm sure you'll take full advantage of it, can't wait to see pics when the gear is installed...
Best,
Ron

Allen,What are the finished room dimensions going to be ??

17x24x8.5-7.5. I'm not sure if that's a good ratio or not. There is some software I want to use to check what resonances I'm going to expect.

Hey Dewey, it may look like yours as I'm going Vicoustics, too! I'm going to order some Tube Traps for the front and Vicoustics for the sides and back.

Thanks, Ron, I can't either!:woot:

Allen, very exciting stuff. Will be watching this thread closely.
Thx, Kev! I just hope it sounds ok. This will be the first full 4 wall listening room I've been in. All my other rooms opened to other rooms, higher ceilings, etc. Hopefully Jeff will help me with some acoustic magic to even out the sound.

Wow Allen! You are adventurous. I think once its done, you will be so happy. Word of advice: put a lock on the door. No joking. If I forget to lock mine, my wife or kids will come in and scare the sh!t out of me.

Good tip, Mike.

Adventurous? Not so much. Kicked out of my family room is more like it!

Looks big enough to get those TAD's your lusting for.

John
They would be sweet in there, wouldn't they?:audiophile:

But if I did get them, I wouldn't just be kicked out of the family room, I'd be kicked out of the whole dang house!:P

But a big congrats to you John for picking up a pair! I am so jealous!!!

Wow!!! These are my favorite kind of threads. Ill be following along the whole project.
Looks awesome so far. The 5/8 and 3/8 rock with green glue is an awesome tip.
I wouldn't have thought of that, and I wouldn't want to carry the 5/8 down the stairs.lol
It gets heavy.
Looks like your doing everything right. Great job!!!!cant wait to see more as it progresses.
