AI music, let’s discuss the elephant in the room

As a side note my granddaughter was over and she looked something up on her iPhone. She has her AI tuned up to where it's like she is talking to an actual person. She gave it a description of a movie and asked what it was. The conversation was a bit unsettling actually. Too real. She just turned 13 so I wonder what the future will be like for her and how different it was for my daughter at her age and myself at that age.
Ai is real scary and ultimately self destructive from my perspective. Many folks who know alot more than I do tend to agree. I don't understand the ambivalence regarding this tech. But our society has, in general, always been reactive versus proactive. And your granddaughter's example is only one small nugget of what the future portends. Don't know what it will take for the world to wake up but it will likely be too little, too late at that point. And like many things Ai, some will use it for nepharious purposes. IMHO, Ai produced msic is just one example. But hey, why bother with real if fake is good enough. But if people enjoy it, who am I to judge. I'm just a old fossil who listens to classical music which I'm sure many people find totally boring and ignore. FWIW, I started a thread on this topic. A very angry person blew it up and now it's dead. Oh well.

For shits and giggles I asked Chat GPT to create a violin concerto in the style of Sibelius. Here is <sic> what it gave me. Then I asked it to convert it to a FLAC file. 😂. Let’s just say that it sounded like a cheap child’s synthesizer playing random notes… Chat and I have a lot to learn to challenge the Masters.

Bar
Melody
1
D5 ½, A5 ¼, G5 ¼
2
F5 dotted ¼, E5 ⅛, D5 ¼, A4 ¼
3
C5 ¼, D5 ¼, F5 ½
4
E5 dotted ½, D5 ¼
5
A5 ½, G5 ¼, F5 ¼
6
E5 ¼, D5 ⅛, C♯5 ⅛, D5 ¼, A4 ¼
7
Bâ™4 ¼, D5 ¼, G5 ½
8
F♯5 dotted ¼, E5 ⅛, A5 ½
Orchestral harmony: Dm(add9) · B♭maj7/D · Gm6 · A7sus–A7 · Dm · C♯°7 · Gm · A7

The first phrase stays inward and searching; the rising seventh bar opens the view, and the high A in bar eight leaves the music suspended, ready for the orchestra to answer.

Thanks for posting. Interesting exercise. I don't know what that means and want to keep it that way. Sounds like a massive failure from a composing and audio perspective. I hope Chat GPT stays ignorant. Imagine what it would do with Bartok or Stravinsky

The issue is likely more on my end. Chat may not be the right AI engine / model to use.

From what I have heard on Qobuz, in its early days, it is making pretty convincing music already. I have no doubt it has or will be able to create symphonies.

I don’t fully understand it but suspect a focused AI model trained to read and write music will tackle it all. Only a matter of time.

Wonderful. Another example how Ai can destroy the arts and one of the best aspects and beneficial creativity of the human race.

I appreciate that AI worries you. That is a valid concern. While I have some concerns, I am choosing to look for the positives of it - exploring how I can use it to make my life better.

I have already used it to redesign our kitchen - saving money and learning along the way. I have used it to help me optimize my audio room and system - saving money and learning along the way.

There have been numerous things around the home that I have fixed on my own with AI help - saving money and time along the way.

It feels like I am just getting started.

Agreed. There are certainly positive aspects. The problem is human nature and the lack of control and discipline with new tech. Look at what cell phones have done to our younger generation. Lack of socialization, inability to have a meaningful conversation, school issues and lack of basic learning skills, isolation, addiction to video games, providing an outlet for unhealthy, self destructive behavior. The use of e friends and online, computer driven relationships is going to explode. As I said before, who needs reality when Ai provides a viable alternative. And our society become more dependant of this tech everyday. Enough of my rant. Thanks for the comments and insight. Best. Gordon

Let’s hope for the best Gordon!
