Added second 20 amp line for amps

Merry Christmas, guys!

Hi Bud,

Definitely agree with you and others that good clean power is an important key to the best SQ you can get from your high end system. Curious, do you know what gauge wire was used for your dedicated lines? Think I may have to upgrade my dedicated lines to thicker gauge wire...

And now that we are in our new home in the Portland, Oregon area, what was a room set up as a bit of a man cave will be remodeled/reconfigured as my dedicated listening room. Big wall of windows and doors will have to be dealt with, and adjacent wall with cabinets for booze, wet-bar, small fridge, microwave, sink etc will have to find a new location in the back of the room or be eliminated. I will work with original architect for design, and some yet to be determined acoustic consultants. Most certainly I will have multiple dedicated 20 or even 30amp circuits (in the case I win the lottery and can get a pair of ARC's Ref 750's or some such power gobbling behemoths.)

The home already has some fancy HVAC so I will be able to control noise levels of airflow. And I will try to have the lighting circuits on a separate panel to reduce noise. But the house has 400amp service with lots of dim-able circuits, so a Shunyata conditioner will be essential. And I will hopefully achieve a full loom of their cables as well.

IMHO, the answer is that you can not rank apples and oranges, specially if you do not know the orchard where they grow. Surely we can debate the effects of room acoustics and power cables/conditioning, then anyone can rank them with his own priorities or preferences.

Also IMHO both are grey zones, most of the time filled with "magic" and almost unpredictable results. The number of variables existing in an audio system is so large that we can not have recipe books and most of all absolutes.

You can still relate on your taste (palate). ...And for most people (99.99% of the majority) it is good enough for real assessment on preference.

Merry Christmas Francisco, & to all your Family & Friends @ Portugal! :)

In most areas 12g wire unless the runs are really long. However, most experts suggest using 1 gauge bigger than what is required for best sound. My dedicated lines are 10g 20amp circuits.

My first dedicated line uses 12 gauge, but I specified 10 gauge for this line, and verified that is what went in. While I wish my first line was also 10 gauge I can live with it since it only runs my source gear, which might use 1 amp combined. On the other hand, the 10 gauge line powers the amps (Pass X600.5), which together consume close to 10 amps just idling.

Thanks, Jock and Bud. I have 4 dedicated outlets, 2 for sources, 2 for amps. Just looked at my wires, they are 12 gauge. Bud, I think you are right, 12 gauge might be ok for the sources, but I may change out the wires for the amps. They would be easy to change I think because they are located in a crawl space with the wires 'exposed', and circuit breaker is no more than 15 feet away.

Bob, sounds like a great plan. Think we're heading in the same direction power wise...

20A line; is that 12awg? ...Or larger, 10awg? ...I believe that according to the electrical code that 12awg is it.

Yep, 12 gauge is what I have and is the minimal spec. Will probably change out the amp lines to be thicker, 10 or better gauge. Arnie (babybear, was also talking about triple twisting of the wires that I need to read up on as well.
