A Band Without a No. 1 Hit Is Outselling Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran

There’s a pretty good reason why older bands are drawing a bigger crowd. I’ve yet to meet a millennial that can actually listen through an entire song let alone an entire album side or heaven forbid, an entire album. If you’ve not experienced it, take a car ride with any millennial aged person and ask them to put on some music. Wait the default 20 seconds into a song and watch what happens...the channel or music selection will get changed mid song.

In defense of the younger listeners, I wouldn’t pay for concert tickets either if my attention span for a song or artist lasted less than half a minute before I got bored.

Old bands with dedicated followers will stand the test of time. I highly doubt the pop stars of today will have real staying power. The Grateful Dead sold out soldier field 3 nights in a row to celebrate 50 years. Phish is going strong after 33 years and has sold out MSG 17 nights this year. Dave Matthews Band has been on the road for a couple of decades and still sells out from coast to coast.

Real bands, playing real music last. Pop “icons” fade when the next one comes to take their place.

I saw Depeche Mode in Amsterdam in May this year. Absolutely awesome.

I met a couple from the USA that took 3 months off work to follow Depeche Mode around Europe watching them live in every country they played.
