Hello from Southern California !! 40+year music enthusiast. First system in 1976 was a phase linear amp/preamp, technics turntable & ess amt 1b speakers, I was 17 & not worthy !!
Currently running an Anthem mrx 1120, Oppo BDP 105, 2 emotiva class AB amps, ESS AMT 1B’s up front, klipsch center & rebuilt klipsch Cornwall’s in the rear.
I need help for my next plunge, I’m running tidal from my iPad through the oppo and just discovered I don’t have mqa & im paying for the hi def - $19:99 a month. Am I wasting 10 dollars a month ? Do I need to buy an mqa dac for my system ? Any and all help appreciated!!

After talking with Crutchfield rep Hogan I’m going to try the dragonfly red dac, an apple lightning usb 3 adapter & an audioquest mini to rca cable to run to my receiver. Update after I get it going !!

Welcome! You’ve come to the right place. This is an excellent audio community site.

Welcome, Steven!

As for your question if you need to buy an MQA DAC for your system: No.

I don't have an MQA capable DAC, and if I ever upgrade it will most certainly not be because of MQA. MQA is a scam and has technical problems, as outlined in this review:

https://www.computeraudiophile.com/...-of-controversies-concerns-and-cautions-r701/

What is more, the alleged timing problem (or blurring problem) that MQA purports to solve may actually be made worse by MQA:

MUSINGS/MEASUREMENTS: On "blurring" and why MQA probably worsens transient smearing.

It is technically impossible that MQA is better than digital formats that are not lossy. If an MQA file is found to sound better, that may mean two things:

a) the mastering is better
b) the sound is different, and more to the preference of the listener, hence 'better'. But being more to the listener's taste is not the same as objectively being better.
