Re: First Impression Music...They sounds so GOOD~!
Paul - I'm very interested to hear how the Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong one sounds. I found the digital to be very "lispy" with Louis voice - on the first track for example, when Louis starts singing, on the CD/SACD versions I hear a lot of "sssss" sound. Very digital sounding. The vinyl on the other hand is superb. I'm curious how your new Ultra HD's sound. Congrats buddy!

Re: First Impression Music...They sounds so GOOD~!
Wow...yes, lots!!! I like the Ella and Louis series (FIM is better though imho), Nat King Cole has a few, Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues (one sensational Blues album and remaster if you like Blues). Put another way, go thru their catalogue on line...I have not heard a bad one yet and particularly whenever I have compared with an original CD...I have been very impressed. Compared with FIM on same exact album, I have noted FIM is more linear sounding...APO sounds like something Steve Hoffman would do with tubed equipment somewhere in his mixing path. Not that this is a bad thing...but FIM when done really right drives more detail out of the mastering. But I have yet to be anything but happy with the loads of jazz albums from APO and blues albums.

Re: First Impression Music...They sounds so GOOD~!
I don't think that Winston Ma (owner of FIM) has read your very complimentary posts about his most recent CD's. I will share them with him.
This is my first post on AS. I want to share the latest FIM release. I have been working with Winston for about 18 months. He asked me to write a book about the golden era of Decca (British) records and their artists, producers and engineers. Accompanying the book would be 4 CD's which contain some of the finest of the great Decca recordings of that era (1958-1980), remastered by the multi-Grammy award winning engineers Michael Bishop and Robert Friedrich of Five/Four Productions. The two volume book was released earlier this month and made its debut at the Hong Kong Audio Show last week. It got a very favorable reception, with the first run of books and CD's almost completely sold out. The big three dealers in the US (Elusive Disc, Acoustic Sounds, and Music Direct) are all carrying the book/CD's at a prepublication 10% discount, with Elusive Disc now having a few copies available.
I had a lot of fun writing the book, which draws extensively from a series of interviews I did with retired Decca engineers and other staff in London last summer. I got to see them again this summer and gave them copies of the test CD's and showed them the proofs of the book that I had on my computer.
I have the set of test CD's and both Winston and I are very happy with the sound, the best that I have ever heard from FIM (I have all of the FIM releases), which, I think, is saying a lot.
This weekend, Winston's friend, Gary Koh, of Genesis Advanced Technologies, is spinning some of the CD's from the book in his room at the Calfornia Audio Show. He also has a copy of the book. I think there is a dealer there who may have a few copies of the book also.
I am attaching a picture and description of the book.

Re: First Impression Music...They sounds so GOOD~!
Purchased these discs during the Labor Day sale:
FIM CDs.jpg
Surfacing and HFO uses FIM's K2HD technology, while The River of Sorrow uses their latest Ultra HD 32bit technology. While Sarah McLachlan is very good, the Eagles' HFO is great, the River of Sorrow disc is outstanding! I love the music on this disc, and to my ears a huge step up from FIM's previously released SACD/CD version (comparing RB to RB). And that was a good sounding disc to start with as well! Highly recommend any of these discs, but especially The River of Sorrow. The music may not be everyone's cuppa, but the sonics are TDF...

Re: First Impression Music...They sounds so GOOD~!
Thanks for the positive comments on the albums. I will forward them to Winston Ma. I talked to him yesterday and he told me that the first printing (over 1100 copies) of the latest FIM release, Decca Supreme Stereophonic Legacy which includes my book and liner notes and 4 CD's done with the Ultra HD 32 bit technology was completely sold out to customers and dealers only two weeks after being released on August 8th in Hong Kong. Winston ordered another printing of the book which should be complete by mid October, by the time the books arrive back in Seattle and are combined together with the CD's. I finally got one copy two weeks ago and several members of the team haven't even gotten a copy yet. We have had some nice comments about both the book and the sound quality of the CD's.

Re: First Impression Music...They sounds so GOOD~!
Hi Joe, there are two different versions of the release. The Book + Liner Notes + 4CD's is the complete one. List Price is $250. The liner notes + 4 CD's is the other release (mainly for those who don't read English). List is $160. When we did the book and the two versions, I wrote a much shorter version of the liner notes for the second version, since the Liner Notes of the complete release have many references back to the main book. Winston also wanted a shorter version for people who don't read English. However, I don't have a copy of the other release, so I am not absolutely sure what it contains. In any case, both versions have exactly the same CD's.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: First Impression Music...They sounds so GOOD~!
Based on my excellent experience with FIM re-issues of the TBM titles, I bought a couple of their Telarc ones. I am not sure it was what I expected. They sound fuller and denser, but I thought overly warm and syrupy. Some loss of details as well. Would be keen to hear about anyone's experience with FIM's remastering of Telarc titles.
