B&W 800 D4 series announced

Nice! I'm confused about the so called reintroduction of the 801 since the old 801 had just one big 15" woofer and the new one just looks like all of the older 800D models with two woofers.

yeah, the 801 is the old 800er?

however, evolution is true king and i bed these new series is killer good.

I wonder if they simply thought that skipping 801 in the model line didn't make sense?

How do these compare to the Sonus Faber, Fyne, Harbeth and other lines of similar price? They must be well above mid fi if Mike carries them in his store.

Our demo pairs are arriving any day now - maybe even today. The planned launch was Sept 1, but someone in Europe leaked things early, so the launch was pushed up.

We were told about the new stuff coming many months ago and had plenty of time to sell off the D3 inventory.

B&W took our initial order back in February or March. Their goal is to have all speakers available at dealers upon the launch. So given that launch was supposed to be Sept 1, we should see our pairs any day now. I like that strategy.

We had some fabulous dealer training (via zoom) about 2 months ago on the new 800D4 series.

Oh, we are getting 802D4 and 804D4 to start. The folks from B&W UK were raving about the 804D4 and felt it was most improved. We always found the 804 was a bit forgotten in the lineup. Folks either went 805 or 803 in that price range we found. Hopefully by really improving the 804, it will gain some interest from folks.

Exciting times.

I guess that’s how big boys go about their business. Impressive.

These are beautiful speakers. Nobody (except perhaps Focal on the super high end stuff) finishes speakers to the level of the 800 series.

I like the changes they've made... the proportions and front radius look a little bolder and more appealing to the eye now. They've also eliminated the veneer edge between the sides and top cap... I always found that transition to be a little too raw and unrefined on the rosewood cabinets.

Have you seen or owned Sonus faber or Franco Serblin speakers? They are at least on par if not better in terms of finish.

The B&W is not bad at all though. I like the look of the D4 better than the D3. I think adding that leather and walnut finish is a good call. Makes the speakers look more refined. I owned the N804 and 805D from years ago. These were my introduction speaker to hifi.

is the system with the highest resale out there a pair of 802s with McIntosh tube pre/monoblock amps? i can see the appeal of it. kind of set it and forget it hifi.

seems the biggest upgrade in the d4 is the aluminum midrange enclosure. B&W continues to provide value pricing compared to a lot of other brands.

Good question. Resale of certain brands or there lack of, is certainly an interesting topic for conversation.
