After extensive discussions with Mike I am taking the plunge with the Big 7.

In fact Mike spec'd it out for me.

It is going to be single ended since this will allow more tube choices down the road. Of course it is DSD256 with the R2R PCM.

It will have the EML 45 Lampi Edition tubes and the EML 5u4g Rectifier.

All packaged together in the optional flight case.

I also purchased from Mike the Lumin U1 that will manage the music. The U1 is special as it takes the best from the S1 sans DAC. The U1 also has two USB outputs for using different DACS. Nice.

Three weeks until Lampy heaven!

Thank you Mike!

Congratulations Le Roy.

My Lampi sounds awesome. You'll love yours.

You're very welcome LeRoy. I'm getting the exact same one as you, same tubes, same everything - with a U1 too. Should be an incredible combo.

Just wondering how much tube-rolling you guys have done for the rectifier? I know results are often circuit/component dependent, but in general the EML has not been one of the more renowned 5U4G/5R4G/5AR4/GZ34 rectifiers?

The EML is a good starting point and readily available from Lampizator to get someone started and form a base for comparison. I discussed with LeRoy the many different options for rectifiers and output tubes. I've tried many. I know Norman had a long list of one's he's tried and liked as well.

Rob - do you have any you like?

Congratulations Le Roy. The longer I have my Big 7, the more I appreciate what it does. It is the most musical DAC I have ever heard. My Big 7 has a number of upgrades, including the PCM upgrade. Also, Lampizator has stood by their product with great customer support. I know you will enjoy yours.

I'm very much looking forward to getting the Big 7 and seeing just how special it really is. I've read all of the extensive posts on many of the Lampis and seen its almost universal acclaim.

This will be my third DAC.

1. Soulution 560 board that lives inside the 541 SACD player
2. Berkeley Alpha Reference DAC
3. And now the Big 7

One thing that does give me pause in my thinking is how MQA might change the complexion of the DAC technology going forward. I know that MQA seems to have much promise but it seems to be slow off the launch pad.

But hey, if it mean better music I'm all in.

I've heard Bruce's setup many times. The only piece that has stood the test of time, that is a constant in his system and satisfies like no other, is the Lampizator DAC. I always enjoy going to his house to listen. We sit there and smile when the Lampizator is playing.

This is very exciting Le Roy. I can't wait to hear your impressions on the Big 7, EML tubes and Lumin U1. Fun times!

Best,
Ken

Congrats. I sold my EML 5u4g street listening to the KR 274b. Also, as Wisnon and audiophile Bill will tell you KR 242 are amazing on the big 7 (they don't work on the GG unless so customized) and take it to near GG levels. This is because that have a different gain to other valves like 300b, 101d etc. I haven't heard the lampi edition of the 45s

In some ways lampi bored me of digital because as an audiophile I love the search and in digital for me there is nothing more to search for. Lampi till the end. Turning my OCD to analog

Still love my Lampi GG. I listened to my Oppo 105d yesterday out of morbid curiosity and I just switched off instantly from the music - I know it isn't really a fair comparison but there is some serious magic with the big DHT valves. I look forward to your impressions but I am guessing that it might well become your preferred digital source for sheer out and out enjoyment.

I must say Leroy, I am very curious to get your thoughts on this comparison. As I have said here before (and been vigorously taken to the wood shed for doing so) my experience with both the B7 and GG at Axpona was that they exude all of the goodness of DHT's along with their limitations. As such, I would love it as a second dac but not as my reference. As my experience was only a few hours at a show, I am excited to hear how well it stacks up in your room with Soulution and Raidho.
