Is it just my imagination or did the specs change on the Lampizator Komputer?

Here's the current page from the website:
http://www.lampizator.eu/Fikus/KOMPU...IC_SERVER.html

From my memory, the previous page said the Lampi Komputer was Windows 2012 based and sounds much more musical than Linux, which tends to sound rather dry/analytical.

Now the new page says the following: "Why Linux? Because Linux does with one hand tied behind the back what the Windows is merely trying to achieve, together with Optimizer, Fidelizer, and even the fabulous Bughead Emperor. Linux is able to match the quality of sound without one hundred problems associated with Windows."

Ken, It it seems to Lukasz is always on the vanguard of innovation in his quest for better sound. Here is a quote from the link:

Specification is subject to change.

Hi Le Roy,

Yes, I did see that, and so it has. :)

The funny thing was on the previous page, they stated that Windows 2012 sounded totally superior to Linux. Now on the new page, Linux is totally superior to Windows 2012. My guess is they initially went with Windows 2012 but it functioned poorly, so they recently switched to Linux. The previous page was up there approximately a week ago.

I'm actually happy they made this change. It makes this still evolving product more attractive to me.

Best,
Ken

Hmm, this looks interesting. Does the product rip and catalog physical CD's (Red & Scarlet book) or do you have to do that separately?

According to Elberoth, Lukasz has completely reworked his server. It uses a different motherboard (with i7 CPU, regular DDR3 RAM and HDMI out) and Linux OS. Lukasz claims it sounds better now.

Ken, so where do you stand in the balance between a dedicated music server vs. trick out computer vs. Komputer?

How has your thinking evolved?

Hi Le Roy,

I don't feel my thinking has evolved since the last time we spoke. All things being equal, I still prefer the flexibility of a computer to a dedicated music server. Having said that, if the sound quality of the dedicated music server is materially better than the computer, I would still consider going that route. Of the computers, my favorites are the Lampizator Komputer and the Uptone modified Mac Mini. Of the dedicated music servers, my favorites are Aurender N10, W20 (I like the clock input for the G-01) and the Antipodes DX. Like I said, not too much has changed. ;)

How about you, any new discoveries??

Best,
Ken

Łukasz offered to borrow me his SSD with Linux OS to try, claiming it sounds now better after further tweaking than Win 2012 + AO. Unfortunately, I just sold my Magico spekaers, so my system is down.

Hi Adam,

It must be tough being without your Magico's at this time of year. Could your dealer loan you some speakers until your S5 mkII arrive? When do you expect to receive them?

Best,
Ken

Windows can be a challenge to work with so I can understand the potential for issues.

It seems to me that if one wants to get an all-in-one solution in a box that doesn't require messing with they wouldn't go with a computer but rather something like an Aurender.

Hi Adam,

With the changes Lukasz has made, the Komputer has become more appealing to me.

Hi Ken, my thoughts are still in flux. I have had an opportunity to demo one of the units you named above. I have incoming still more units to evaluate so I have not reached any final conclusions. If I do go the dedicated music server route, I think there will still be role for the Modded Mac Mini that I have. It is so versatile for other things. Its role may fade but it will still serve a purpose.

I am focused on trying to figure out the LAN connection into the soulution 541 DAC section and getting that optimized at the moment. The designer feels that the LAN connection is where the real performance is.

There are so many forks in the road. My Berk Ref DAC is not in my signature line but I haven't sold it yet!

But I'm plowing thru some recently acquire DSD files at the moment. Wow on the DSD.

I feel like a kid in a candy store!

The moral of the story is never buy his product when it first comes out. Let it settle for one year or two before considering. I feel sorry for the komputer owners who have already bought the komputer.

Ken, have you been able to find any pictures of the rear panel of the Komputer? I have not been able to dredge any up.

Hi Le Roy,

I looked for a rear photo too. I haven't been able to find a single one.

Which DSD files that you purchased impressed you the most? I found Norah Jones - "Come Away With Me" to be very impressive sounding. Be careful on Cat Stevens - "Tea for Tillerman" in DSD 128. Apparently the DSD 64 version sounds better than the 128.

Best,
Ken

Similar to the Big 7 DAC. Those who waited got a nice aluminum chassis.

There also was a price drop with the updated Lampi Komputer of 1,000 Euros. It was 5,900 Euros and now it's 4,900 Euros.

The one that I've listened to six times in the last two days is Elton John's song "Love Story" from Tumbleweed Junction from 1970. Play the DSD 64 then switch back to Redbook for the stark contrast between the two formats. I found it to be very engaging. :audiophile:

This statement isn't really fair and there is nothing to feel sorry for them about. Like our DACs we always continue supporting our customers and those out there with Komputers will be getting a free jump drive they can boot right into the linux based audiophile server with and replace their windows servers or do a dual boot to compare for themselves.

With respect to the price decrease, it is a direct savings for the end user and only fair as we won't be incurring the cost of Windows sever, jplay, optimizer, fidelizer, etc.

The new software is light weight, easy to use, does dsd up to 512, pcm to dsd conversion, playback from RAM (like BHE), Tidal integration, multiple hard drives can be directly connected, etc., etc. It's a really slick setup and sounds fantastic.

Update:

Just got onfirmation today. Lampi Amanero did indeed support LINUX DSD256 via DoP and now (breaking news) supports "Native" as well.
When I asked how come, Lukasz says the version of Linux he uses does and NOT ALL Linux(es) will be able to do this. This works with current stock Amanero.
On another note: the EML Anniversary MESH 45 tube is being tested for SQ now and availability will be mid-Feb. Check out FBook for the update.

Hi everyone my first post on this forum! I have a Berkeley Reference Dac connected to my somewhat antiquated Mark Levinson 31.5 CD transport. While the sound I am getting is an improvement on my previous ML360s dac there is still a touch of hardness to the sound even through my Magico S7 speakers (which are wonderful by the way). I'm beginning to wonder whether it is time for me to come out of my cave and embrace the world of computer audio! Ive held back mainly because of doubt about whether a server can outperform a good CD transport. I did see Elberoth's musings on this subject a while back which made sense to me but I have never actually listened to a server in my home set up. If I take the plunge do you think something like an Aurender N10 connected direct to the BAD via AES/EBU would provide better sound quality than say a Lampi Komputer connected via a USB converter (eg Berkeley Alpha which I dont have)? From what Ive read elsewhere the BAD works best via a direct AES/EBU connection so that would seem to point to Baetis and Aurender. However the Lampi looks interesting although if it does offer AES/EBU does anyone know how good this is compared to Aurender/Baetis? I will mainly be ripping CDs and perhaps downloading the odd high resolution files, DSD is not important to me and Ive yet to try the streamer services (Tidal et al). Many thanks!
