ZU

What crossover speakers do you like? Perhaps i can glean more about your preferences then.

the Radian tweeter isnt in your face at all - im very sensitive to metal tweeters for instance. Its one of the best tweets ive ever heard. With 300Bs, i dont think you will have any issues. If you put bad class a/b ss on Zus, they would likely sound lean. At 100dbs with no xover, the amp is really displayed more prominently and becomes the fulcrum of a zu based system.

i personally chose Def 2s over Magico V3s and Wilson Maxx2s if that helps. The V3s were my second choice, but i didnt like amp requirements and they werent dynamic enough.
im new to 300b's in my home, i been desiring them from listening to all i can for years. and ive always been 60-150w tube guy. so all the speakers i like and have experience with i cannot use on these amps. and that is my problem. i dont know where to start.
my 90db sonus fabers really pump with my cd player, but i dont use it and only own a couple cd's. but with my table and really low output cartridge, i feel the mix of only90b/15w amps an low output is not getting me enough oomph to run my system as effectively as my $200 cd player. so even though my new allnic phonostage has given me more gain, its still not the setup id feel was perfect for me. but this is only when really pushing it, on moderate volumes its the best sound ive ever had in my house.
monday is horn day here. got a pair of cornwall3's coming to use and keepb if i like them, and at the great price i may just keep em around anyway.

Fwiw, my buddy 213Cobra was going to buy SF Cremonas with Mac 1201 amps before Zu.

im a 60-100 watt tube guy myself and always felt Magico would sound better on tubes, but they really arent designed for them. I had dynaudio c1s before zu.

They're definitely 'forward', i.e. the midrange presence is apparent and the soundstage has a depth that many aren't used to from a traditional cabinet speaker. This is a good thing imo. One other thing to note is that although Zu now put 600hrs on the drivers before delivering, they still take several hundred hours before finally settling in so take your time and give them a chance!

I joined this forum for a specific reason: Comparison between Zu Omen and Zu Soul Supreme. I have the Zu Omen and I may want to take advantage of the FULL value trade in for a year or less. I have about 9 months to make a decision.

So...My question is is there a REAL difference? Has anyone heard them both side by side? Has anyone even hear them both in a relative short period of time.

The Soul Supreme reads good, and looks sexy. But there is a major $$ difference. So, specs and a sexy look are not enough.

Help.

Thanks!

Its a large upgrade with the Radian tweet and the better cabinet/FRD. Probably the best value speaker in the line. You wont regreat it a bit.

Thanks Keith,

I sure hope those upgrades translate into better sound. I hope I hear a difference.

Thanks

Big difference- you will be very happy. Let us know how they sound :)
im interested as well. keep us informed please. i have a friend who is telling me to buy the new druid, he heard them and loves them. so much hes selling his beloved mac amps and looking for 300b's or 845's to use so he can buy the druids. he did say his 75w amps are a poor match for zu's but all the lower watt stuff he heard with them was outstanding.

The Druid has a slightly more rigid cabinet and better griewe implementation apparently than the Soul Supreme. i much prefer the soul form factor though. I personally would buy the Soul Supreme then upgrade to Definitions at a later date.

Hi Petro85,
Just seen this tread. I have Druid V's with an Undertone sub, if you're still interested to hear them I live in Staten Island right by the Outerbridge. Let me know, I run them with Frankenstein Mk.2 300b amps.

Best,
Joe

Why is the Omen Def cheaper than the Soul Supreme? The Omen and Soul Supreme have the same 10 inch and super tweeter, the Omen has an extra 10 driver.

And with the large 10 inch driver, is there a problem with beaming ? How is the dispersion?

How does the Zu sound compare to the Tekton sound?

Soul Supreme uses the far superior (and expensive) Radian supertweeter. I also think it has a better cabinet as I recall.

I don't find the latest drivers to shout which is what many full range drivers can do. they definitely are a bit more forward/open than other presentations due to lack of crossover. the Omen line is more susceptible to toe-in than the higher end speakers.

Lots of opinions on Zu vs Tekton, but they are quite different designs. Zu really is a more high end product than Tekton, which is more focused on value.

Thanks for the reply, you have the have the Soul Supremes, right? How is the dispersion? You stated in other threads you owned Wilson Sophias and Dyn C1s, both excellent speakers and a sound I am familiar with. What was it about the Zus that enticed you? Thank you in advance.

I have Definition IVs which have nice dispersion.

I really dig the Zu combo of tone with dynamics and love the amplifier flexibility. I think the Dyns are great for the $, but they really need power and you have to crank them up to get them going/come alive. I'm not much of a Wilson fan these days (I've heard Alexias several times at a friends house recently in fact)- while my Sophias w/ BAT gear were good back in the day, I've gravitated to a less "hi-fi" sound and a more holistic, dynamic one.

Nope, but my new Druid Vs finally showed up. I ordered the gloss black, and that took awhile. Compared to my previous Zu Essence speakers, these have a bigger sound stage, and are much more refined, and clearer in the treble.

I am still tuning on the bass with spike length.

Solid upgrade for me, very happy.

I really like mine too. Adding an Undertone sub brings the whole sound up a notch!
Enjoy, with a good SET the sound is very musical and engaging.

Joe
