You can't even text and walk

Thanks for posting. It's become an epidemic. I see it ALL the time.

Yep its an obsession that's actually turned into ( in my opinion ) brainless humans walking around clueless.

FYI: The problem of text-walkers has become such a problem that cities such as Antwerp in Belgium, has introduced ‘text-walking lanes’ so that they do not irritate or endanger other pedestrians.

Texting is a huge issue that impacts the safety of not only the person texting but innocent people around them, both walking and driving. I think the cellphone service providers should have their operating systems identify motion using GPS so if a phone is in motion at a speed that exceeds perhaps 3 mph it automatically locks out texting, both reading and typing.

It is my opinion that driving and texting should be punished with 30 days county lockup and $500 fine on first offense, six months lockup and $1000 fine on second offense, and a year lockup and $5000 fine for a third offense. Convicted texting and driving offenders cellphones should be confiscated and destroyed. There should be no exceptions, no warnings, no hardship exemptions, no letting the cute girl off, no early out. When states get serious about punishing texting drivers that jeopardize other people's safety perhaps the message will change people's habits.

I'm in agreement. It's impaired driving. Period.

We have to be on the defense for it.

The guy who rear ended my F-150 earlier this year was texting. His Prius front end was demolished as it rammed into my trailer hitch. I still haven't taken my truck in for examination.

I like the idea of disabling texting at 5mph + and an auto response.

Nissan Motors has proposed legislation affecting both texting and calling from moving vehicles but I doubt it will get anywhere. The technology exists now to block cell transmission in vehicles with the transmissions engaged.

I think that will help in the new iPhone IOS. Even tho people can override it and some certainly will. I think a bunch of people will use it.

I'm ok with hands free calling. But I've seen people - guys/gals, old, young, texting while going down the I-75. I saw one person, texting with both hands, trying to steer with his knees, weaving all over the f'ing road.

Hell, I even saw a guy with a laptop on his lap, typing as he went down the road. Unbelievable.

It's an epidemic. A true epidemic.

I am certainly not one for Government interference in our lives, but this is one case where phone makers must install software that disables the keyboard while in a moving vehicle. If we all agree that seat belts have made us safer and saved lives, and I think we do, then this is the next step.

That being said, in Canada, they passed the no texting law years ago, but then the Nanny state decided to keep extending it and extending it more and more to the point that you can't even do hands free calling or have a bottle of water in the car and drink it. I understand that taking a swig of water in the car could be considered - however so briefly as "distracted driving" or "impaired driving", but damn...that's nuts.

The other issue becomes, what if you're a passenger in the backseat? Can you still text in a moving vehicle?

The largest contributors to distractions resulting in MVAs are the driver's years of experience (younger drivers tend to have less), talking to passengers and eating/drinking behind the wheel.

Lots of us are quick to condemn actions of other people while excusing the same faults in ourselves. Multitasking is a myth, even among drivers with many years of experience.
