Wyred4Sound STP Issue?

So I just put my "new" STP....which was unboxed and sitting on the sidelines for a spell...into the loop.

1) I like it; especially with the Ref 1s. I've been looking for an amp, to give the inefficient KEFs more "jump"; but just inserting the STP seems to have helped!

2) I do notice a small issue: when I change volume (and I even noticed it on balance); I'm getting a little "electrical" pop in my left channel. I'm not talking about the "clicks"; even though I hate them...I've had pre-amps with volume controls like that before (notably C-J); so I know that's normal.

No...this is a little, static-y pop. I can re-create it regularly, as I go up and down in volume; and it only happens in the left channel...because I changed balance over to the right, and could not reproduce it there (which is when I also noticed the left channel do it, even as I was just changing balance over).

I know we have some STP owners here. Known quirk...or should I reach out to Wyred?

Other than the volume control click, mine has been dead silent for almost two years. And yes is does have surprising amounts of "drive" and bass.
 
When I had one, I could hear the relays clicking through the speakers, when cycling through certain volume settings.

Yeah thanks; but I think this is different. I mean...I can hear the click-click-clicking, of the volume control; but this is more like an electrical "pop"...that doesn't have any steady pattern to it.

It seems to be only in the left channel too. This is balanced, into mAMPS. It's out of the loop again, while I try-out some IAs; but when my VT-50 comes back from repair...and "new" Classe CA-2200 shows, it'll be fronting them.

We'll see if it does it, with those amps; and I might also try it single-ended...just to see if I can isolate the issue.
 
Once you think you've narrowed it down some give them a call. I've found them easy to reach and interested in helping work out any problems.

That's a good idea. First rule of troubleshooting; better like this, or better like this :)

Ah, another idea; this has always been from remote. Never even thought about turning the knob...lol.

I have a similar issue left side popping, and no sound, after upgrading my STP-SE, confirmed with my headphone amp. The missing channel was not as absolute with the speakers. Its currently on the way for them to look at it.

Give them a call/email, they are very responsive, and happy with their job. They are concerned with getting it right, and having happy customers. I love their gear, and have the STP-SE, and the DAC2, both upgraded.

Well...my sound doesn't drop out of the channel; it's just "popping" (not clicking, or in addition to the clicking)...as the volume goes up and down.
 
My upgraded STP-SE was returned fully functional. Apparently issues with the power supply, which required some part replacements. All good now.

Send them a note.
 
Read the FAQ on their website, e-mail or call. It took me less than 2 minutes to find out that a very slight electronic pop is normal at about 13 and 33 on the volume control. It is a side affect of the specially designed volume control. They would prefer that it did not happen, but having that slight click/pop at two points on the volume control is a trade off they are willing to give versus designing a lesser volume control.

From the FAQ:
"Why do I hear a 'clicking' sound from the STP-SE volume control?

The ‘clicking’ is not a fault and a known by-product of DC as it interacts with the contacts on the resistive-ladder volume control. However, the clicking should not be readily apparent unless the volume passes the 13-15 mark and again around the 31-33 mark, the two points where all the relays come in contact. There should be no clicking at all when the unit is on mute as the volume control is disengaged.
It may help to short the input plugs on the back of the unit to help prevent DC buildup."


 
I rarely get above 12 on my pre-amp, so I don't contend with that often, but yes, its just the way the pre-amp works AFAIK.

I figured; but this does make me feel better. That it's "normal". :thumbsup:
