My first high end audiophile experience was when I heard Wilson Audio Watt/Puppy 7 driven my Mark Levinson 33H mono amps and ML pre amp, DAC and and transport. That was many moons ago. Since then I have seldom heard Wilson Audio again. They never do shows in the Netherlands as far as I know.

Yesterday I visited a fellow audiophile. He has Audio Research pre (tubes) and power (class D) amps Emm Labs SACD player and a ClearAudio innoavation compact with zyx 4D element. He has Watt/Puppy 6 with 7 tweeters. I really liked the sound. They are maybe not the most revealing speakers, or the most accurate but they do sound good IMHO.
This got me thinking. The Watt/Puppy 6 and 7 are becoming cheaper. Maybe I’ll be able to afford a pair in due time. But:

  1. My room is a about 24m2, is that too small?
  2. There are over 8 different models as far as I know. Are there some models that are better or worse?
  3. Watt/Puppy are not the newest speakers around. Would it be better to forget about them and focus on newer speakers?

Wilson Audio sometimes gets a lot of hate on forums since they are very expensive. I haven’t heard the new models. But the older ones I have heard sounded great.

I had my Sashas (which really are W/P 9s) in my 24m2 room, and they were a perfect fit. Those speakers look substantial from the outside, but only have dual 20cm woofers.

Personally, I would go with sth like a Magico V3 speaker, which was cheaper and better sounding. On top of that, going the V3 route (or even the smaller V2) would save you a lot of problems with W/P rotting bass drivers foam supensions, rotting front panel foam and rotting grilles.

Thank you for the replay. I've never heard the V3. I have heard the M5 on Spectral amp and CD player. Not the best combo IMHO. Too analytical, musical not so much. But the M5's were very new. That did not help.

I had a look, seen 2 or 3 pair V3 for sale around 11-13k euro, Watt/puppy 7 is around 8-10k euro.

But like I said before, I'm not in any kind of hurry.

The M5s are definately NOT an analytical sounding speaker. Spectral gear on the other hand is. The M5s are much smoother than any of the titanium tweeter equipped Wilsons. The V3s can be found for 10-11k EUR - use www.hifishark.com to check availability and prices.
