Why Cosmic Fine-tuning Demands Explanation

The universe works for us because deep physical laws seem to work. But if the values of these laws would much change, in either direction, then all we see and know could not exist. No galaxies. No stars. No planets. No people. Do such special physical laws cry out for explanation?

Well, it is certainly possible to live your life without ever contemplating such questions but the inquiring minds want to know! :)


First a primer.... What is the "Fine Tuning of the Universe"? Why are brilliant minds busy trying to solve this puzzle? What approach needs to be taken? Will we ever have an answer?

Simply consider the statistical probibilites of this universe being so precisely fine tuned for life as we know it!

Theological vs Scientific (theoretical) argument

 
That the universe is 'fine-tuned' is generally not controversial.
The laws of physics have to be 'just so' for anything we know, including ourselves, to exist.
But why this is so and what this may mean is highly controversial. Coincidence and wildly good fortune?
Multiple universes with anthropic selection? A Creator God (in one form or another)?

Thanks! There is certainly that approach as well. It is all a fascinating topic. Not having answers at the moment, gives rise to many possible explanations and mysteries to solve. (Perhaps never being able to answer any of them either!)

where we come from and where we we go in the end and where the end of the universe is and what comes after....well, i belive it is good to respect that some things are supposed to be not to know.

my own speculation is that there are energypoints in a honeycomb configuration. consisting out of absolute density.
when they move, multiple kinds of energy gets released and moves into the field. the fastest and lightest materials (helium) will reach the middle first an meet the energy coming from the other points and get compressed. big bang!
what we see now, black holes etc is a energy backtransfer to the points. no expandation actually.
there is a little chance i could be wrong, lol
 
Not to get away from the topic but to enhance the point, I also like to ponder the odds of LIFE itself. (Full disclosure, I am an AGNOSTIC, not an Atheist or Religious so show me proof either way and I am good with that!)

I am more interested in the actual odds and what fascinates me the most, is how lucky we must really be!

Brilliant. Roger Penrose is asked for his opinion on fine tuning. This video puts me in awe at how special this place we call the universe and everything in it truly is.

The initial state of the universe at the Big Bang event and everything that we have in our universe today had to have been so precise that calculations show a 10 to the power of 123 precision. It is a number so big, over hundred zeros.... that it is not only improbable, it is next to impossible and yet here we all are! Truly mind blowing.
