It's really all about the music, but there is no doubt that having it sound "good" increases my enjoyment tremendously. Even among audiophiles, though, it seems there are many different opinions about what "good" is, but that's not what this topic is about.

As much as I enjoy music, I must say your statement is a bit of hyperbole. Music only means something to those who find it interesting and that is segment of the population that seems to be getting smaller each year. For most people music is background noise. Those who participate on websites such as this do so to be around others with similar interests. I am sure that those individuals who spend a lot of time on sites directed at motor yachts, sailboats, guns, hunting, bowling, photography............... thinks their world is much larger than it is.
As much as I like spending time "listening" to music I prefer to go hear a live performance even if the sound is worse. Music also falls behind my appreciation for travel. I still have a ways to go to hit 100 different countries.
I also have no interest in collecting music. That to me is another subset of this hobby. I go thru my music at least twice a year get rid of the discs/LP's/downloads I don't listen to on a regular basis. It just clutters up my 2-channel room and I want to make room for new artists.
In the Netherlands there are a lot more people with a normal income with a highend set than miljonairs with a highend set. Music is a lot more than only listening to music at home. I believe that a good balanced audio set who can give a physical 3 dimensional image is an important part to enjoy music on a higher level. Going to a concert is a different feeling.
I strive to be a better listener to all those great and small. I'm still learning. Music can unlock certain inhibitions and show you reason.

My Gf can't handle the Beach Boys or any vocals that are even slightly similar. But there is a lot she does like and that goes from the 50s to current. We are looking for a house together right now and she has zero concerns that the stereo is going to be in the living room.
At shows I always bring music I like to play at home. No point in not enjoying the time I am at a show! You can't play music at shows that you think people will like. Some will like it, others won't. So just play what I like, and people come into the room anyway.
For as long as there have been people, there has been music. In the oldest archeological sites there are always signs that music was there too. What I get from this is that music has a lot to do with being human. Personally I have been involved with it in whatever way I can or could. At first I put together a small stereo when I was 12. I had my first piano lessons when I was 3 1/2 or 4. My stereo grew through high school and college; I played in bands and orchestras. Eventually built a recording studio in my basement. Steve Tibbetts recorded his 'Yr' LP there. I made on-location recordings, released them on LP and CD. I got into building my own circuits for my stereo in college- that turned into a manufacturing operation. Currently I still run that business and play in a rock band- we rehearse in our recording studio, which has multi-channel analog and digital and even an LP mastering lathe. The more I am involved with music the more I like it. But don't ask why, 'cause I don't know! It just is.

It's the music that always interested me, from transistor radios to a good stereo system, it makes no difference, I would still listen to music because it touches my soul.
My wife loves listening to music, and really appreciates the quality of our system. But she doesn't like to fool with all the boxes, she leaves that to me.
She also has a very good ear, and can truly hear the differences when I make any changes.

When you compare the hearing of men against the hearing of women then it is known that women have a better hearing than men. But the interest in music and audio is for men more important. When a man aks his wife what she thinks about his system? She often says: I don't find it that special, or I don't hear it. The truth is is that often it is not that special. I started to focus on 3 dimensional sound in 2007. When a man brings in his wife I always want her to become part of it. I always have a few hundred cd's with em. I ask her what she likes. These day you use a streamer with even more music. 3 dimensional sound is much more appreciated by women than 2 dimensional. A lot more of these women also uses the set of their partner. So audio can be important even for women!
Hopefully an actual woman will weigh in on this topic.
It reminds me of my school days when us boys would sit around debating on "what girls want".

Mike, they want what "we" want, without the "we".
Anytime a woman tells you that "we need to do something," that usually translates into you need to do something that she wants done. If you happen to have a mouse in your pocket, it could be construed as "we" need to do something. Otherwise it's just another "honey do" list that she is trying to make you feel better about by acting like she is including herself on the action part of the work when she really has no intentions of doing anything but riding you like a bad claiming horse until you complete what she wants done.

Chris-You keep saying that over and over again like if you say it enough times you might actually believe it or it might actually come true.
The flip side of that is that you can only keep them happy for so long and then they become unhappy again. Either that or you will look in the mirror one day and wonder who that person is staring back at you. Trying to keep a woman happy is a full-time job like keeping weeds out of your yard when your surrounded by neighbors that breed dandelions. The work never ends and this is coming from a guy who has only been married once and is currently doing 37 to life.

My hearing is definitely better than my Gf's. And I know my hearing isn't what it was even 10 years ago,,,

My wife commented about the exact thing you're describing. We were comparing different amps, and when I went from one to another, she said,"where did our 3D sound go". I put the amp she liked back in and she knew right away.

Why Audio?
Because I love music. Because one day I heard how awesome music could sound when played through a great stereo system - and decided it was something that I needed in my life. Because I am fascinated by all of the elements that go into recording and recreating sound. Lastly, I like audio because it's so multi-faceted that no one person will ever learn it all.
