Melco looks interesting so wondering who uses one with Lumin (particularly via direct ethernet connection). Far as I can tell it looks like a somewhat more advanced/tuned replacement for the Lumin-native L1. Is that right?

Any model that supports MinimServer should work.

Note that in case you're considering to buy a used Melco unit, beware that pre-V4 firmware of some old non-EX models cannot be upgraded to latest firmware without sending it back to the dealer, probably at additional cost.

Thanks Peter. Only would consider if I could go direct connect over copper ethernet to the X1, like I do with the L1. Main advantage to me is copy straight to it eg from Qobuz download and one-button backup to an external USB SSD. Otherwise, the L1 does just fine for me.

Is the idea behind the Melco to replace the Lumin X1 hard drive? If so does it have the 2000 song limit on playlists?

As long as you're using Lumin app or any OpenHome controller, you'd face the 2000 entry limit for Lumin OpenHome design no matter which MinimServer device you use.

I suppose there exists UPnP controller app that won't have such a limit, but you'll have to keep the app running for the playback to continue, since UPnP non-OpenHome playlist exists inside the app not the Lumin OpenHome renderer.

Yet another option would be to use Roon, but it costs $699, plus you need a computer to run it.
