I was very lucky over the weekend to get to hear, see, and touch some of the most gorgeous gear I have encountered.

One system was the 082 Integrated with a new Esoteric CDP driving the Wilson Sabrinas. Very nice setup.

The other system was 088 Pre-Amp, 911 MKIII Amp, and the 089 CDP all driving Wilson Alexias.

Being an old Toolmaker, I was impressed with all the beautiful machining and polished components. The sliding top door on the CDP was like silk. The remote was also nicer than most.

The sound was also stellar. I certainly would not mind having some of this gear in the rack, but at the moment it's slightly out of my reach. Maybe used someday tho.

With poor distribution and the death of the founder http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/dieter-burmester-19462015/, the brand has really gone by the way side. Even at Munich, there was no buzz. Their room was blingy, but nothing new.

I know Joe has owned various Burmester pieces and always tells me he loved the looks, but didn't care for its "nervous" sound.

I like the looks and build quality, but the sound has been just "ok" to my ears.

I only got to listen for 15 or 20 minutes, but it was a big step up from the Viva-Tannoy setup. I'm thinking it was more the Tannoys or the McIntosh CDP, then it was the Viva. Louis tried telling me that the Viva driving the Wilsons was just as good as $100K worth of Burmester gear, but I didn't get the chance to compare.

Louis is a smart man. :)

Brian,
I have owned a Burmester 956 amp for the past 3 years. It is a superb amp that sounds fabulous on any speaker i have tried and does so without breaking a sweat. Not to mention the fit and finish and build quality is at par or better than many cost no object brands. I drive it with a Marantz reference SC7 preamp -- the pairing is an excellent match.

I just bought a new Porsche Panamera Turbo and ordered it with the upgraded Burmester stereo system they offer. The sound is amazing for a car stereo. Its so good, I'm tempted to just go sit in the car when I want to hear music, instead of cranking up my big audio rig. If I could only figure out how to hook up a turntable in the car.....
