What does Everybody do?

Hi Howie,

Very cool. Lafayette had their factory out on Long Island somewhere around Syosset or Plainview I think. I loved the volume knob on the unit. It was one knob split in two for each channel.

My father was an electrical engineer and built and fixed a lot of home electronics. We use to go to that Lafayette store in Long Island all the time. Our first stereo's that got me hooked as a child were a Heath Kit amp and tuner that my father built and a Lafayette Integrated.

Small world,

Larry

My dad would take us all the time to
Lafayette. Loved going there and playing with all the electronics. Fond memories.

I am a "young" grandfather of 62 years, Pharmaceutical with my own Pharmacy in Malaga.
Fortunately for me, I have not gone through such traumatic experiences as those reported by some colleagues, their wives. Mine was only a painful divorce in 2003, followed in 2010 by a wonderful second marriage with a wife 13 years younger than me and certainly much more beautiful than me (lucky guy).
She has her own Pharmaceutical Consulting Company. In this way, I do not have to justify because I buy a cable, nor does she buy a bag of the XXX brand and that makes me very, very happy.
This is a really nice site and you can get a lot of information from other colleagues.
A big greeting for all guys.

I'm a petroleum field engineer in charge of distribution (I pump gas). Actually not true, just trying to bring some levity to the discussion :) Sorry to read of everyone's personal losses and torment.

My job? Im in the real estate consulting biz (actual title intentionally omitted to protect the innocent :)) Its a white-collar world full of contradictions for someone like me raised with a blue-collar consciousness. My present field of endeavor is the sort my dad despised "easy money" which was his euphemism for someone that doesn't know how to work with their hands or ever toiled in the hot sun. Fortunately he did teach me valuable skills that will stay with me forever. Did I ever mention I've built a house from the ground up?

No, and please don't. :)

My father was blue collar and the same as yours in attitude. He too was real hands-on on remodeling the house by refinishing the attic into two bedrooms, redoing all the floors, and installing a central HVAC. Made me help and do a lot of the grunt work, especially getting into small spaces for the duct work. That is probably why I am so lazy now, and good at programming, which is basically just sitting and daydreaming. :)

I have been retired so long I forgot what I did. Retired at age 45. I am now 74. The thing that brought the early retirement in play was my father having medical problems. Mom was not a take charge person and didn't drive. Being their only child it was my time for some payback. Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. After he passed mom was in bad shape and I took care of her. A very challenging calling but also very rewarding in life experiences. I have loved music from a very young age. My first stereo was a Magnavox suitcase stereo I got as a high school graduation present. My first decent stereo was a Eico tube integrated, Garrard 40 turntable with a cheap Shure cartridge, and a home built set of speakers using Utah co-ax 8" speakers.

Not so young grandpa my friend:)
I am 59 and we have 4 grandkids, the first is already 10 years old:)

I worked in a bank in Manila, Philippines right after collage. Migrated to Canada with my wife and our 3 yr old daughter (and 4 luggages) in 1990, when I was 25 yrs. old.

28 yrs later, I am now managing the small company that first hired me. our boss retired in 2015 and sold the entire business/building to me and my co-workers. the business is into sheet metal manufacturing, making all kind of fittings for the heating industry.

always a music lover (nothing sophisticated - classic rock, top 40). bought a Sony mini component a month after getting married, bought a boombox on my first paycheck here in Canada. as a struggling immigrant, had to work two jobs for a number of years, and had tried and failed numerous other small businesses along the way..

got into fitness and aqua hobby for a number of years. I was also an avid golfer for a while. got introduced into serious audio to cope with the loss (lung cancer) of my direct boss/best buddy/golfing partner in 2006. I bought a bunch of classic rock LPs, Innersound stereo amp, PS Audio pre amp, Oracle TT from a guy and never looked back... the disease has taken over. I am now a small time audio dealer on the side.

now 54, love my job and hoping to work as long as I am healthy.. I just returned from a trip to the Phils to deliver parts and discuss specs of a custom OTL amp (6c33c-b) and pre-amp project with a friend.

also visited an audio friend in Manila to listen to his newly acquired Tidal La Assoluta but since he has not set it up yet, we got to listen to a couple of his Gryphon systems... some people have all the luck, I am glad this hobby allow me to meet some of them.

AS is one of the few audio sites that I visit now and is my favorite. lot’s of cool dudes on this room, and hoping to meet some of you personally in the future.

I was 38 when I was presented my 1st grandchild.

When I was 19 I worked in an inner city middle school in Fort Worth. We had a student arrive to school drunk (7th grade) and had to call her parents to send her home. Turns out this 13 year old had a 26 year old mother and 40 year old grandmother. That was a huge eye opener for me. Unfortunately over the past decade much has changed in the school system and its hard to feel like you can make a difference when anything you do is a liability. I got scolded because a student of mine was having issues that favored dyslexia and dyscalculia. Transposed words and numbers, but she was a bright girl. I told her my wife had similar issues and at the age of 30 was finally diagnosed with both as well as dysgraphia. My AP heard about this and accused me of giving her a diagnosis and that it wasn't my job to do so.

My wife was an incredible woman. Biggest heart I've ever known and had just gotten into law school - hence the diagnosis. The woman she went to had to reevaluate the results two or three times to actually diagnose her. She was so smart that if you just looked at raw numbers, she didn't have these issues. However, when you paired it with her intelligence, the differences were quite stark.

She passed away at the school on the morning of her last final of her first semester. She was stressed about money and managing the multiple ways she was pulled. She was stressed about losing her full scholarship to Texas A&M Law School by not keeping her grades up. She was stressed about being a mother to her 8 month old daughter and 4 year old son.

The Dean approached me during services and shared two of her four final grades with me. In one she got an A on the final. In the other, she had the second highest grade in the class. The third wasn't graded and the fourth... well, she never made it. We were supposed to 'survive' that day, and I've been in survival mode ever since.

I'm in a good place now but still trying to find the balance of life again. I'm not sure this was the best idea to post this but typing it out has been therapeutic. I guess I needed to travel back down this road as I haven't done it in a while.

Cheers,

Skip
