What CD player with Shindo ?

Paul...you want it to be a CD/SACD player? Meaning you can spin both CD and SACDs (the actual silver discs??) or a DAC just capable of decoding DSD files? Meaning, do you have a lot of SACD discs you want to spin and you want a player that can spin SACD discs or you plan on downloading a lot of DSD files and you want a DAC that can decode those files?

From the suggestions you received, the Cary 306 Pro can spin CDs and SACDs but the DAC itself will not decode DSD downloaded files (supports only PCM files up to 24/192). The EAR Acute III CD Player (latest version) only spins CDs and again the DAC via the digital inputs only decodes PCM files. EAR came out with a two box solution (spinner and DAC) that both spins CDs and SACDs and decodes DSD files via its DAC (I will look up the model number but it's not on their website yet but I have seen it mentioned in a number of recent audio shows). As for the AMR DP-777 that is simply a DAC (no disc spinning) and again only decodes PCM files (up to 24/192), so no DSD (SACD) file support. AMR has a CD-77 which is a disc spinner and has digital inputs but again no SACD/DSD support.

If you want to keep the cost low, the Oppo BDP-105 is a good choice. If you go with the Modwright tube mods, you will add another $2-3K and up its performance very nicely.

The Esoteric players from the K-07 on up, all support CD/SACD spinning and I believe there is a firmware upgrade in the works (it may have come out already) that allows DSD decoding via the DAC's digital inputs as well.

The Meitner MA-1 DAC supports both PCM and DSD files but no disc spinning. The MA-2 includes a disc spinner but no SACD playback but does support DSD files.

the EMM XDS1 v2 CD/SACD player ($25Kish) supports CD/SACD spinning and both PCM and DSD playback via digital inputs of the DAC.

dCS Puccini CD/SACD player ($20Kish) supports CD/SACD spinning and both PCM and DSD playback via digital inputs of the DAC.

many others to consider as well (Soulution, MSB, etc...).

Questions for you are:

1) budget?
2) do you want to be able to spin CD and SACD discs?
3) If yes, do you want the CD/SACD player to also have digital inputs that allow you to access the DAC and the DAC to support both PCM and DSD files?

Thank you Cyril .

1) budget? Up to 10K ( Less is better of cause - New or Used )
2) do you want to be able to spin CD and SACD discs? (Yes)
3) If yes, do you want the CD/SACD player to also have digital inputs that allow you to access the DAC and the DAC to support both PCM and DSD files? ( don't really care )

My Modwright 5400es fits the bill. Very analog sounding. Just a few grand.

Is that why all the shindo owner doesn't post ? :dunno: :(

I don't use a cd player, that's why I haven't posted. I have a server fed through an Acoustic Plan dac. If I was to have a cd player I would just buy the matching transport and use that.
For my money, I would probably get an LM515, or a dCS Puccini, if you wanted a one box solution.

Paul

A dealer in Colorado has his showroom demo 5400es on Ebay with a BIN price of $1450. Perhaps he would be willing to send it to Dan Wright in Washington and then Dan could send it to you modded. You would be out well under $4000 that way and the unit would be gone over by Dan before he modded it.

Paul:

If all you want is CD/SACD spinner and less than $10K and it sounds like to me it will be in occasional use, I agree with posters above. Either get a Sony 5400ES or an Oppo BDP-105 and send it to Dan Modwright and have him do his tube mods on it for an extra $2-3K, and you will be around the $4-4.5K mark and spinning CDs and SACDs and liking what you hear. Jeff (JJinID) has a Modwright modded BDP-105 and swears by it. It should play very nice with your Shindo gear. I believe Joe had a Sony 5400ES and he was always impressed with that little sucker.

If you do not want to deal with the hassle of sending it to get modded, then I would suggest:

1) Esoteric K-07, K-05 or K-03
2) Cary 303T or 306Pro (both no longer in production) so you will have to buy used or I have seen a few 303Ts BNIB on Audiogon
3) Unmodified Oppo BDP-105 or Sony 5400ES (although the Sonys are also no longer in production and you will either have to buy used or seek out a BNIB on Agon or the like)
4) Luxman D-05 or D-06
5) Marantz Reference CD/SACD players (SA-11S3 is their top of the line right now I believe in the $4K range)

All these are under $10K in terms of list prices, except for the Esoteric K-03 which is just above $10K but you can get new for under $10K for sure. Out of all these, if you want analog-like CD/SACD playback (if that is what you mean by being synergistic with Shindo, meaning having less digititis or a digital edge to it), my vote would go towards the Luxman players, and after them the Cary 303T if you can find it.

If you are willing to do the Modwright mods, I would probably go with the Oppo or Sony with tube mods from Modwright given the high praise they have gotten from users. The only issue with modded equipment is whether resale value drops considerably or not, and I don't know the answer to that question. I think the Esoteric gear is excellent but whenever I have heard Esoteric gear, I always feel like I know I am listening to digital playback...it has that digital sheen but I have admittedly not heard the current K-0X crop which have gotten excellent reviews. So something to think about since you asked specifically about Esoteric.

Hope this gives you some stuff to further research.

Paul...one more question...how many SACDs do you have? And is SACD playback essential in your search for a disc spinner?

I sold my cd player quite a while ago and don't miss it. Ripped all my cd's to a mac mini and paired it with a Luxman DAC. Much better on many levels for me.
Maybe something to consider as well.

Maybe, But some of us don't have SACD players and can't help. I have a PS Audio PWT transport through an AMR DP-777 that is just great, but it's not a SACD player. I don't see any reason why any good digital player through Shindo would not work well.

Aesthetix Romulus Signature spins CDs an does DSD and hirez PCM via its USB input.
